Backseat MMORPGing (MapleStory)
Now, I have a Magician on MapleStory, which doesn't have it that well with Magic Claw, but does have a very good Energy Bolt. In its early days, the Bolt was more reliable than the claw, as where the claw would hit some for 1 damage twice, the bolt would cut through for a decent amount of damage.
Apparently, a lot of players perfer the claw. Like one asshole who, while I was trying to fight on, just had to tell me it was a waste of skill points. Apparently not managing to shut up, I defamed him and ran. Apparently, he used another character to defame my character. He declared that he was "helping" me.
Are any people out there sick of those players on MMORPG's that "know the game" better than you do, and must point out your "problems" for your (in)convience.
BTW, if anyone wants their names to defame them if they cross paths, PM me for the character's usernames.

Welcome to MMORPG's where the asshole quota will beat you with a breadstick then smother you in hot oil. I know a lot of people in MMORPG's who try to tell me that I'm playing the game wrong when I spend more time making my character dance in a patch of carrots then killing monsters, I usually just ignore them or tell them that it's none of their business. Shouldn't matter as long as I'm having fun.

I play Maple Story (thanks to you actually), but I'm not playing to level up. I'm playing to roleplay. Probably one of 2 people who try to on the damn thing. I also try to talk eloquently and have never said a negative comment since I started. He's a fun little character I hope he becomes famous someday for being too nice =]
I refuse to fight and I have no possesions, clothes, items, anything. I have made it almost all the way around the map and that's without having a weapon to attack with, I have gotten damn good at jumping and avoiding enemies.
That said, I get a lot of crap for being a level one, and refusing to fight. Everyone tries to tell me whats better for me like I actually have no idea how to play the game, (all the while I refuse to admit that I am in a game and confuse them more). I mean for God's sake, it's an online game where you play little kids and beat the crap out of mushrooms. Why do people take it so seriously?
So yes in response, I too am sick of people who act all high and mighty and think they know what's best.

Sometimes it's hard to not notice them though, people can get very annoying, I guess it's conditioning on my part. I've played alot of MMORPGs so I just learned to ignore very well.DarkMagician wrote:Should've probably seen that one coming.ruxen wrote:Welcome to MMORPG's where the asshole quota will beat you with a breadstick then smother you in hot oil. So the consensus is ignore them.
And Van, thanks for getting my hopes up. I don't like using credit cards.

No, because I do usually know the game better than anyone else. =)DarkMagician wrote: Are any people out there sick of those players on MMORPG's that "know the game" better than you do, and must point out your "problems" for your (in)convience.
On Final Fantasy XI, anyway. But I never acted arrogant while trying to help players. I actually helped them.
I used to have a Maple Story account, but I grew tired of it. A statistic in which other players control (fame) didn't seem very balanced, in my opinion. My new favorite (semi-)mmorpg is Guild Wars, which is still in the Beta period, but coming out later this month.
And here I was thinking that roleplayers didn't exist in Maple Story.I play Maple Story (thanks to you actually), but I'm not playing to level up. I'm playing to roleplay. Re: Backseat MMORPGing (MapleStory)
Yeah, my story is really corny and stereotypical, but entertains me so it's good. I'm searching for a lost city where I was born, the problem is that it's not a real city in MapleStory so I go around from city to city as a "naked" unarmed level one character asking if anyone has heard of the city (and of course no one has) some smartass players tell me it doesn;t exist and then I spout off my life story which they then call me a fag or town loser for 45 minutes.Kirb wrote:And here I was thinking that roleplayers didn't exist in Maple Story.
So if anyone on Maplestory sees a naked level one running around in places that are hellishly hard to get to without fighting, that would be me. So talk to me hear my story and then spread the word =] I wanna be famous before he succedes and disappears. A modern RPG myth =]

Maybe that city/town in the central dungeon is your hometown?
Good luck getting there with a naked character, though.

Re: Backseat MMORPGing (MapleStory)
So. Let me get this straight.DarkMagician wrote:[story]
1)You "ruined" your character by picking the wrong skill.
2)Someone tried to give you some helpful advice.
3)You defamed him.
4)You want everybody to defame him.
Gee. I'd better stop giving advice to the people.
I've read many guides, and I know almost everything there is to know about the first two job advances for all classes. (And a good share about the 3rd job, even though it's still not relased in global version).
With the poor in-game instructions, written in mangled english, it's almost impossible to get everything straight without reading a FAQ or guide of some sort, so many people that try it, make decisions they will come to regret about level 20-30.
So when I see someone using a skill they shouldn't have (For example, level 11 warrior using PowerStrike, or level 10 wizard using Magic Claw) I explain the basics of their class to them.
Fortunatelly I have yet to meet an asshole to defame me for that.
Usually they say "Oh thanks, I thought that Improve**Increase is worthless, now I know it's crucial!".
Or "OMG, I didn't realize I screwed my character this badly. I'd better restart now."
Or "I can make a 'Banditsin'? So I'm not screwed up? I don't have to restart? Yay!"
Or "Thankyouthankyouthankyou, I wasn't sure, I'll raise double shot now!"
FYI. I also raised EnergyBolt, and about level 25 I decided to restart my magician, I was just too weak to level up!
EnergyBolt vs MagicClaw isn't about "preffering" one to another. MagicClaw is simply better than the other one, but the in game informations seem to suggest otherwise. It's one of the things that are impossible to get without reading a guide. And every guide mentions it as one of the first points.
So when a magician with energy bolt shows up everybody instantly knows that:
1)He has ruined his character.
2)He hasn't read a guide.
3)He's probably about to ruin the character further (due to not having read a guide)
If you don't like hearing about it, just change the channel, or stop reading the people's comments.
Then pick a fire mage, and start using FireArrow ASAP.That'll shut em up.
BTW, I roleplay too- I'm Kurim. I search for the key of the twillight. My hope is that jr. Balrog drops it.
And helping people is staying in-character too in this case.

BTW2. What's your level?
You are the Non. You must go now, and never return."

I haven't played any online games in a while. haven't played video games at all in a while. Though never could get into MMORPGs. I played Ragnarok for a bit and maple story just never could really enjoy them.
I have started to make time to play some console games a little again. picked up the Yu Yu hakusho game and been playing that for about two days now. its kinda fun. the selction of games right now isn't all that however so I got better things to spend my time doing.

yarps- I get what you are saying, but honestly it gets pretty damn annoying when all other players are like OMG YOUR MAGE HAVE STR?!!! not everyone wants to follow the cookie-cutter guides for games. I once saw a lvl 15 thief with 25 str. I was tempted to tell him that he should put his points into luk and dex from now on, but I was pretty sure he was well aware of that, since he probably could not equip most items. and he didn't need me telling him what he already knew.

Actually, I have a tendency to hold grudges. I'm keeping it to PM's because I know other's aren't as "social" as me.YarpsDat wrote:So. Let me get this straight.DarkMagician wrote:[story]

My biggest problem with the person is that he had no tact. Not "Y'know, other people use MagicClaw" (which stated other people and was decentralized). It was "Why did you use EnergyBolt? It's a waste of SP's"Gee. I'd better stop giving advice to the people.
Someone I knew had Pokemon for Gameboy. I had the guide, and once told him I had it and he said he wouldn't get it "because it felt like cheating". I left that discussion at that, since we had different goals. I did not say it was a waste of time to go off without it.
Sorry, but not everyone's a min-maxer.*SNIP*

I don't understand why anyone should care enough to run around telling other people how to raise their characters. If someone can't be bothered to look at a guide, that's their business, and it just means that when they die horribly, you might get to pick up the items they didn't get the chance to grab before being eviscerated.
Feh. MapleStory got boring pretty quickly, and it didn't help that there was practically a hacker on every screen.

Seems like an over-reaction to me. Certainly not enough for a de-fame.DarkMagician wrote: My biggest problem with the person is that he had no tact. Not "Y'know, other people use MagicClaw" (which stated other people and was decentralized). It was "Why did you use EnergyBolt? It's a waste of SP's"

I'd defame if he were calling me a noob, or an idiot or something. You certainly have the right to build your character the way you want, but it doesn't sound like he was directly attacking you, or even being very rude.

Re: Backseat MMORPGing (MapleStory)
I do understand that.DarkMagician wrote:Sorry, but not everyone's a min-maxer.
For example, I'm going to use polearms even if they were the worst weapons around. That's because level 50 polearm(see the pic in the last post) looks like Kurim's.
Fortunatelly I really like the range of polearms, but it's true the range doesn't quite compensate for the slowness and less-than-stellar stats.
And in the second job all the other warriors get good offensive and defensive skills, while polearm warriors get some relatively useless powerups.
And recently I discovered that in 3rd job spears will be two times more powerfull than polearms, due to the way the 3rd job's special moves work. ;_;
I'm currently considering some mixed build, that'd let me use both spears and polearms, but I'm afraid it won't work. So I'll just go with the polearms.
So, I do understand purposefully making a weak character for roleplaying reasons.
But you said it yourself, you've taken EnergyBolt by mistake. I bet you went through hell trying to level up, and you are just too stubborn to think of that as a mistake it was. You're living in denial, trying to convince yourself that it's right to do, and that's why people saying it isn't annoy you so.
(BTW, This is the last time I'm mentioning the issue, so no defame pls.)
I'll give you an example.
On the other forum one guy once asked some questions about his Page (warrior using maces) character. After a bit of discussion it turned out his page had about 10 INT and LUK (while they should be about 5), and he had problems wearing his equipment. AND he also had ruined skills (PowerStrike at 6, and SlashBlast at 11), as a result both skills were pretty useless to him, making him way weaker than other warriors.
I explained it all to him. And suggested to restart. But he was level 31 at the time, and claimed that he "didn't care if he's weaker", mentioned something about his persistence and stuff, and that he thinks "I'm not gimped. I'm unique!", and that the character is enjoyable or sth. So I didn't insist.
I suggested creating another character to see the difference between a correctly built warrior and his "unique" character, but he was using a shared account and couldn't create any more characters.
People would say "You need to master these skills"
And he'd reply "But I hardly use them, they are useless and can't hit anything, and cost mana and stuff."
To which people would reply "That's precisely the reason you need to master them. Then they will hit everything, cost less mana, and be very usefull"
Some time later we convinced him and he decided to sacrifice some of the second job SP to fix his skills. He'd still mention that he likes playing his "Unique" character, and refuse to restart. (he was level 34)
Now get this. A couple of weeks ago when the signups reopened, the guy got himself an account, deleted his old char, created a new one, and posted this:
(emphasis mine)Thanks to the re-opening of Beta I managed to get my own account.[...]
Also, I'd like to thank everyone who helped me realize that Donita was done so poorly. I'm following maxism's guide to the letter and I see vast improvements.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think yes. Unless you restarted the character some more times during the past few months.grabmygoblin wrote:btw: you on my buddy list in MS? I never see you on.
