Take this as my introduction...which may or may not be all that you hear about me. I figure it's easier to ask people what normal behavior is than to just jump in and stick my foot half-way up my own sphinter in an embarising yet completely boneheaded series of posts.

Unfortunately, I don't have a comic yet. I found out about Keenspace from a friend three days AFTER the sign-up went down. Yay. I have artwork, I have a story-line, and I'm about to put the two together (I want the art to be about three-four digrees better before I do that) but I have no where to put it.

Sigh.

Anyway, If I haven't comitted some horrendous gaff already, could some of you please show me around?

I've tried giving advice before, but the person resented it, so I'll keep it to a minimum; even if you get your comic soon, don't plug it until you have at least 30 comics!! Basic information that must be conveyed to the masses, you know.

Right, you're actually doing pretty well so far - you have fairly good grammar/spelling, you haven't tried to bash people, and you asked about introductory stuff before "sticking your foot in", as you said.

It's a good idea to also read some of the old threads starting with comic plugs - generally the follow-up replies to these are good guidelines on how to act and how to make a good plug. I know it sounds sort of like a kindergarten class, but y'know, we act like kindergarteners anways.

Don't feel bad if anyone starts bashing you *coughDarkMagicianN00bBagcough*, we always do that to newbies. It's when you get to be an oldbie when it starts gettin' good.

So anyways, you kinda reminded of my own introduction. There's really not much to show around. This is a General Discussion forum, you're allowed to post anything you want, as long as you use some sense, or you might not like the feedback people give. It would be a good idea to read some of the older posts, to get the feel of this forum.

Lately people are getting pretty anal about newbies that come here only to plug their comics and never come back, so make sure you don't.

I have either been or am a member of several forums...the two biggest being Anne McCaffery's Kitchen Table and NaNoWriMo (and I'm gonna give that one a while...see if anyone here knows what that is).

Thanks for the advice. I had planned to get about two-three weeks ahead before I started putting up the comic...re-enforcement, especially positive is good.

Hey, is there anything wrong with doing previews of the comic before the actual "go date"? I mean, I saw one thread...the thirty-second preview (is it amiss for a newbie to want to kill?) so I don't know...

Oh, and I am completely internet illeterate. My discovery of KeenSpace was because I asked a friend if he knew any HTML-code I could use to set up a site.

The rule about not plugging to early has some reasons:
if you have very few comics on your site it's enough to make people tired("oh, moving the mouse, clicking the links, it's so much work!"), but not enough to make them interested. And then for the next month you're on people's "Checked that already, nothing interesting there" list, and you don't want that.

and if someone want's to give you comments, it's very difficult to base opinion on just a couple of drawings.

Anyways, it's ok to ask for comments, to post previews of your pages/ character design, and whatever.

What would be the idea way to kick-off a comic so that it is neither ignored or detested because of over-exposure?

I never oficially plugged my comic. One day I just put a link on my sig and that was it. Some people were already familiar with my artwork, as I post crap on this forum all the time, and they went there out of curiosity.

But there's nothing wrong with plugging as long as a)you have a decent comic base (some say 20 at least) and b) you don't plug it by saying "go see my comic, I know it sucks, but..."

Welcome, if you play your cards right here you can easily avoid being lynched. Although you probably won't be able to avoid all the harrassment. EVERYONE gets harrassed here.

More seriously though, it might be a good idea to just let the people wander to your comic.
ie. Post some nice drawing, and they will go to your site to see if you have more.
And they can't blame you they clicked the link...

I also noticed that if you mention something about your comic people are likely to check it out, just to know what you're talking about.
ie. someone posts a nice drawing you can say "I wish I could draw that good", and people will check if you are just beeing humble.

Also there is that thing called "webcomic above thread", where we give reviews to each other. And other ways, like "random plugging thread" that happens every once in a while.

Generally, just be cool, post funny/wise stuff, don't annoy people, and everybody will like you, and they will visit your comic if you mention it.

Oh my! I know EXACTLY how that is.

I participated in NaNoWriMo (Or National Novel Writing Month) this november. Basically, thousands of insane writers get together to try to write 50,000 word novels in one month. The by-line was quantity over quality, the purpose was to get you used to NOT using the "Internal Editor" Until AFTER the story is finished. Everybody said "I suck" all the time, and I got into it even though I knew I DIDN'T suck.



And LOTS of people told me they read my excerpt from the story and wished like heck they could read the rest of it.

But to get back to the point...I'm still trying to decide.

At least I got a lot of time.
