The Web Comic Secret Santa

Post by Litazia Tanxashira »

Hey folks,

As you have probably guessed, I'm not a regular (at least in this particular forum), but I have a comic, and that's what's important :)

Anyway... I'm running a fun little activity called the Web Comic Secret Santa. What's that, you're probably asking? Well, it's sort of like your standard Secret Santa - put names into a hat, pull a name, then you get the person whose name you pulled a gift. The difference, of course, is that it's with web comics.

So, what happens is that you submit your web comic to a list. Then, thanks to the magic of scripting, the comics in the list are distributed to the participants. So, you get a web comic - and then you produce a piece of fanart or a guest comic (or both! or as much as you want) for that comic. Meanwhile, someone is producing fanart or a guest comic for YOUR comic. Sounds like fun? It is!

I ran this last year, and the people who participated fully enjoyed it. This year, I want to get more people involved, because we are, of course, a community... just a big freakin' one!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask, either here or by PM (PM might be simpler, I don't come by here often).

Thanks for your attention :)

I'd sign up if I weren't planning on working on my new web comic project over Christmas break, as well as Somesuch. Actually I should probably go ahead and sign up for the site for the new one...
Is that so?

Hmmm, I don't suppose you've seen the Fanart Joy thread which does near the same thing?

But then again, maybe it's gone a wee bit off-topic now...

Not really. Fanart Joy is leaning towards anarchy. This way at least it's guaranteed that youre not left without fanart.

So, what if your comic is made by three collaborators?
The name's M.E. Charm. Adress me with my full name. If not, I will not give you your jelly.

I think that main difference is that here you don't choose for who you will do the fan-art but is assigned randomly.

So, what if your comic is made by three collaborators?
Forgive me if I say I'm confused at this. Is it just a collaboration, like, three people got together to make a web comic? Or is it three people, with comics of their own, making a web comic together?

If it's the former, then I don't see a problem with submitting your comic.

If it's the latter... well... the reason I have a "One comic per person" rule is to (a) stop any possible hurt feelings and/or stressing out the artist involved (imagine having to do two pieces of work for two different comics in a short period of time when you have lots else to do, like exams and shopping and stuff), and (b) to prevent nightmare scenarios (I know a guy who starts up a comic every other month. He's at about 10-12 comics right now. Imagine if he submitted all his comics...)

I'm looking at your site right now... do you have more than one artist? Can someone else draw if you submit? Because as it's set up, it can't distinguish between comics done by the same artist... so I can't guarantee that Comic Writer X won't be assigned McDuffies, or vice versa. It becomes more unlikely the more comics that are in the list, but it's still a possibility.

So yeah. I hope that *somewhat* answers your question :)

Hence that little possibility, neither Nawa or I will be mad if Charm does art in front of CRX.
Actually he knows that, he's just putting confusion in your rows.

What if your Secret Santa hates your comic? :-? (Or vice versa?)
You're just jealous because you can't get away with speaking in the third person...

Then you get a really crappy fanart that has your character doing horrible things to midgets! :o
Hmmm, I never thought of that possibility...

Just do the fanart anyways, I mean, it is the season for giving. I'm sure you can set aside your differences with that comic for a few weeks.

I've never gotten fanart, and the way I see it, I don't want fanart from people who don't really have any interest in my comic. But maybe that's just me.
Is that so?

Besides, someone said "you are guaranteed to get fanart"- that's untrue.
It would work only if all the participants were 100% trustworthy.

Practice shows they are not.
You are the Non. You must go now, and never return."

"1.Scan in high res 2.tweak with curves, levels or something to clean up the scan (or use channel mixer to remove blue pencil lines) 3.Add colour using a layer set to multiply. 4.Add wordbubbles and text as vector shapes. 5. Merge all layers. 6.resize to the web size. 7. Export/Save for Web" that's all I know about webcomicking.
