[FTP] Using IE/Mozilla/Firefox/Safari/Opera to FTP in?

Postby STrRedWolf on Thu Mar 24, 2005 8:37 pm

In a word, STOP.

We switched from using ProFTPd to Pure-FTPd, which was lighter weight and didn't crash the server. This has an odd side effect: If you FTP using ftp://username.keenspace.com in a web browser, the server denies access because your web browser defaults to logging in as "anonymous" -- and you forgot to tell it your username.

I'm not going to change the server config again.

Instead:
  • Get an actual FTP client. Ask here for some suggestions.
  • Use our Web-FTP service. A link is on the Gear site
  • I discourage this, because it just pushes the load up on the server and leaves connections up to time out in 10 minutes, but... Use ftp://username@username.keenspace.com instead (replacing username for, you guessed it, your comic username).

I can't recommend FireFox's FireFTP highly enough.

We don't want you using "butch.keenspot.com" because we may shift comics around to more servers than one.

Well, I tried out Philex. It's not quite as convienient as IE but at least it beats FTP commander.

That may be a stupid question, but what are the advantages of using a browser FTP instead of a "proper" FTP? I tried the Web-FTP only once, screeched and ran back to SmartFTP in the blink of an eye. Surely there's something I'm missing?

No need to install anything, mostly.

I also found the Web-FTP quite newbie friendly, as opposed to something like Smart-FTP. I haven't really used Philex much yet so I can't really speak for that.

PhileX randomly decides that some of my files can be deleted and some cannot. It also decides that some files can be edited and saved, while some can just be edited and fail at saving. It finally decides that only certain folders will be allowed to upload content.

PhileX; putting the "Ph" in Fun!

Using the direct ftp server would be easiest, but it's unfair to bog down the site. I'll try to find a decent free one that works.
