Mystery of the vanishing images, signups

Postby Kisai on Sun Jul 04, 2004 4:45 pm

Hello all,

Have you noticed images vanishing lately? Are your comic sites starting to look like they've been hacked? Or maybe that you haven't updated in like ever?

There is a background script running that is "cleaning up" the root folders/directories because people are lazy.

The basic idea is that I intend to make a script somewhere along the line to allow for a one-step update, however because not everyone follows logical design rules, this means that you might want to make changes to your sites so your site doesn't get perpetually broken by autokeen.

So if you are doing any of these things, you need to modify your site:
1. uploading -everything- to /public_html . don't do this. Autokeen can move stuff for you if you upload it to the right place.
2. uploading images to /public_html instead of /public_html/images . don't do this either, from now on, images that end up in the root are going to be moved to the /public_html/images directory automatically
3. please please please stop hotlinking, I'm going to be pulling dns records of sites that pageload exceeds 500kb caused by hotlinking. I'm currently having an issue with people who hotlinked from neopets, go-gaia, and livejournal.
4. if you are not using autokeen, please periodly update the advertisement code, it does change.

Now... some design problems people are causing:
1. relative links in images if your site has
Code: Select all
<img src="../image.gif">
or
<img src="images/image.gif">
or even
<img src="./images/image.gif">

The difference is that the top one says "image.gif from the directory beneath me" , the one in the middle says "the image.gif from the images in this directory" and the last one says the exact same thing as the middle one.

You should be using one of two means:
Code: Select all
<img src="/images/image.gif"> which is the fully qualified path relative to your site or
<img src="http://yoursite.keenspace.com/images/image.gif"> which is the same as above, but hardcodes your sitename in. Don't use the second form if you plan on getting a domain name. Because then the files will be referenced incorrectly

Also, NEVER reference the /workspace directory, your hard drive, or a third party site for images, the first two won't work, and linking to someone elses site content without their permisison is wrong.

Please use the guide banner system for advertisements.

Next.

There has been an increase in what appears to be "dump sites"

Basically people signing up, and then using their site to transfer large amounts of data without ever producing content.

Here is the current criteria for me not deleting a signup:
1. If it looks like a drawing
2. It's not "text in an image"

I'm still debating if I should just delete any new sprite comics, they aren't as frequent, but seem to be quickly abandoned.

I'm always tempted to delete a signup that is a sprite-rip, likewise any "random stuff" type of description, as far too many have these descriptions. Also any description implying you aren't really trying... why waste the time?

So... what just happens when you don't get the signup response?
1. Check your bulk mail folder.
2. Check that you can recieve e-mail
3. Use a free email provider like gmail or yahoo
4. wait for it to expire and signup again with the same name and a different e-mail

Now... the "deletion" threshold is set to 90 days, if a comic is "empty" for 90 days, it will disappear. So if you forget about your site and never uploaded something, it may very well disappear.

What about .css files?

Just images are being moved, there should be no need to move css files... if they had been uploaded to /workspace/webpages .

Why, did you need to upload it there manually?

My site background's in the public_html/images folder, and the body tag includes "background="images/background.gif", but it's showing up blank white.

Other images in that folder are showing up on the front page. It's just the one that's turned white. And it's a black image normally, so now all the text is illegible.

I've reloaded the page. I've run a manual update. What now?

Reassuring. So perhaps it's just my computer? (But why only that image, and no others?)

0 by 0 Pixle index page...

Postby AuWolf on Mon Aug 30, 2004 12:28 am

Hi there,

This is my first time having a real problem persay. I have the files set up in workspace as you have mentioned.

Dailytmplate and Indextemplate are in the root.

My extra sites are in website and the images are in public_html/images

the comics were in workspace/comics

the problem I keep having and have been working on for the past three days (including backing up and wiping the site to let autokeen rebuild it) is that I keep getting the index file coming up as a 0 width by 0 height pixle setting. I fixed it manually once and then autokeen updated it reseting it back to the 0 by 0 again. I'm using the template set up so I don't know why I keep getting this error. I hope this is enough info to help :-\

I'm using ACEFTP 3 Freeware version and I'm browding in Opera.

Thanks
Keith

I think there are two common causes that give these symptoms (width=0 height=0)

1. you uploaded the graphics file in ASCII mode. You should be using BIN(ary) mode.

OR

2. The file is named "png" while in the inside it's a jpeg or a gif.
Usually caused by just typing in the extension, instead of selecting the filetype from a list.

I've been a little reluctant to ask for any help as I get tired of being n00b bashed but I really want some help with my site, so here goes...

When I first created my keenspace site back in Dec 03 I figured out how to link my images and whatnot and everything was goin hunky dory till all of a sudden my images stopped showing up. I came to the forums asking for help and just got talked down to and my problem was never solved.

Here's an example of how I have my images linked to:
http://chibikeba.keenspace.com/images/kebatacobg1.jpg

I was doing it like that even back then and at first the links worked, but afterawhile my images quit showing up. Since I didn't get any help at the forums and I didn't want to get talked down to again I decided to load my images at photobucket.com and just link to them from there. I knew it wouldn't last forever and that eventually I'd start to run out of bandwidth as more and more peeps start to come to my site and that's what my problem is now.

So to try and fix that I've uploaded all my images back to the keenspace server under /workspace/images and fixed all the links on my pages but I can't see anything.

I read the frequently asked section and found out that my norton firewall could be causing me not to see the pages so I did what the walkthru said on that section and I still can't see anything.

I know I'm probably asking a stupid question or I just did a simple mistake somewhere but I could really use some non-hateful help. I've never been good at html and maintaining a website and I know that. I don't need to be reminded what an idiot or a dumb n00b I am I just want some help with my site please.

Could you provide a html page with this image?

And when you do that, go to the page, and press refresh while holding shift.

The link seems fine, so I suspect you entered the URL, or used that link to see if the image worked.
But such an activity is called hotlinking, and it's forbidden. So the image didn't work- instead your browser gets an error message.
And if you went to the page with the image, then your browser thinks it already has the image cached, and it displays... the error message.

The other possibility is that there are some capital letters in the filename- the filenames must match exactly, and "JPG" is not the same as "jpg"

I wasn't trying to hotlink, merely showing how I do the code for my images and wondering if I was doing it wrong all this time.

Well, I went to my friends house and checked out my page there and everything works fine. I guess there's just something wrong with my computer cause when I go to my site none of the images load.

here's the link to the site:
http://chibikeba.keenspace.com

Everyone seems to be able to see it except me^^; so I'll just get J-chan ta look at my computer and see if he can't figure out what the dealio is.

Thanks for your help^-^

The problem is usually caused by Norton Firewall/Security or EZ Armor EZ Firewall, or Zone Alarm

If you mean the background (judging from "bg1" in the filename), then I can see it just fine (though the current one seems to have "bg02" in the name.)
And I spotted no missing images, and if everyone else can see it, the problem's on your end- probably firewall or something.

BTW, you might want to use something like <title>Bob & Fred - Demons in Society ***todays_date***</title> in your document's head...

and BTW, Demons is plural, Demon's is possesive (or contraction of Demon is)
