The Most Common Questions
For other questions, see bottom of thread

Q: When will signups be available?
A: Now!

Q: Help! I've lost my password!
Q: I've activated my account but I'm still not getting my username/password!

A: If you still have the email you signed up with, you can request another on here:
http://siteadmin.keenspace.com/cgi-bin/ ... ssword.cgi

If you've lost your email address, though, you will have to contact the Kisai or Kelly (The Admins) and let them know. Make sure you have proof of identity when you do so they knows you really are the person who owns the account.

Also check and make sure your email software isn't filtering your Keenspace mail out Hotmail seems to be filtering 'Space mail out.

Q: Help! I've just gotten my website and don't know where to begin!
A: A collection of Step-by-Step guides can be found here:
http://gear.keenspace.com/cadet

Q: My Images aren't working!
A: Click here for the answer

Q: Where is SiteAdmin? I can't log on to it!?
A: SiteAdmin is located at http://siteadmin.keenspace.com/cgi-bin/ ... /login.cgi

Q: I can't add another Author in the control panel in SiteAdmin! It keeps logging me out instead!
A: This feature is currently broken. You cannot add an additional author until Kisai or Kelly fixes it.

Q: Does Keenspace support PHP, CGI, SSI?
A: No. Kisai says: Keenspace is not for testing out your php scripts, and what has happened from time to time is that I've updated php for one of the php maintenance systems and it's made php temporaily available on some sites.

Reason:
All the *.keenspace.com only sites all run under the same apache section which is more memory efficient, but the downside is that it's theoreticly possible for someone to tamper with each others sites.

FTP is much the same way, the DB controls on it restrict you to your own site.

If it wasn't for these two systems, the amount of resources required to have as many sites available would be outlandish.

IF you want php/perl even mySQL, see http://www.keenprime.com

Otherwise stop asking, stop uploading phpBB and every varient of cgi/php BB system to keenspace expecting it to work. It WILL NOT.

Please DO NOT ask or even try uploading postNuke/phpNuke, it will NOT work, likewise with any forum software

Kelly says: Because all comics are on one server, most of the server's time is spent sending comics out. We can't spare the processor time for user CGI nor PHP, so we've disabled it.

Q: Can I get a forum for webcomic from Keenspace Forums?
A: The answer is no. Signup for forums are still closed. Try getting one from elsewhere (Talkaboutcomics, Ezboard etc.)
Or get a Tag-board. They're all the rage right now. ( http://www.tag-board.com )

Kelly says: In order for signups to open back up again, individual forums that are unused need to be locked and moved, and a specific system needs to be built to automate generation.

Q: I've having issues with Keenspace's anti-hotlinking system (and other related issues)
Kisai says:

1. Why has the anti-hotlinking been kicked up a notch?
a) People hotlinking to the banners is causing their statistics to be quite wrong. The "hits" "visits" and "referrers" was being inflated, when nobody was even visiting the site, just seeing the banner.

2. Why do I have to go through the trouble of using the guide banners, when it's faster for me to link to the banner itself?
a) By creating one link for everyone, you can update the banner at anytime without having to go back to all the places you put your banner, or who have copied the code to your banner and have them update it.

3. Isn't this the kind of crap that geocities pulls?
a) sort of. Unlike Geocities this isn't a blanket ban on hotlinking (geocities implemented bandwidth caps to stop that). This was done originally to stop people from using keenspace as a dumpsite for the images they use on their journals, forums, etc. For lack of any other content.
b) This also stops "page scrapers" from downloading the sites and showing the content elsewhere.

4. All I see are red-x's (IE) or blank space where the images are!
a) People running Norton Internet Security or Norton Firewall need to turn off privacy settings that strip out the referrer. This is an additional reason why the anti-hotlinking has been uped a bit, as without the referrer information, you don't know where/how people are visiting your site.
b) the system shows error 410, gone when an attempt to download the image directly is done.

5. I don't like this!
a) I'll make an exception for VALID hotlinking (ie, if it's on another keenspace/keenspot site showing our advertising) otherwise I'd advise purchasing a domain.

6. Purchasing a domain?
a)I'll turn the anti-hotlinking off if you have a domain and want it off, but the domain has to either be "pointed to keenspace" or you have a subdomain that "is" the keenspace comic. (which your nameserver configuration has to have a A entry for the subdomain pointing to our server)

Kelly says: If you do buy a domain, KeenSpace can "park" the domain on KeenSpace's DNS servers, and have it point to your comic automatically. That way, all pages are served from your domain and if we move, your domain moves too.

Q: HELP! I've lost my indextemplate.html and/or dailytemplate.html! Where can I get them back?
Q: I just got a new account but there is no indextemplate.html or dailytemplate.html files in the /workspace folder! What do I do?

A: If you've just gotten your account and find the files missing, this is a server-side bug and not your fault. However, you can fix this yourself, so don't panic.
If you've lost the files, well, at least you've learnt the lesson: Always make backups. But because these things happen, here's the code you need to make a new indextemplate.html or dailytemplate.html:

indextemplate.html code
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0
Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html lang="en" xml:lang="en"
xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head><title>***comic_name*** - ***todays_date***</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
charset=iso-8859-1" />
</head>
<div class="keen_ad" style="display:inline;">
***advertisement***
</div>
<div class="main">
<h1>***comic_name***</h1>
<h2>by ***author***</h2>
***todays_comics***
<br />
***first_day*** ***previous_day*** ***next_day*** ***last_day***
<br />
***comic_name*** is hosted on <a href="http://www.keenspace.com">Keenspace</a>, a free webhosting and site automation service for webcomics.
</div>
</body>
</html>

dailytemplate.html code
Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0
Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html lang="en" xml:lang="en"
xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head><title>***comic_name*** - ***todays_date***</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
charset=iso-8859-1" />
</head>
<div class="keen_ad" style="display:inline;">
***advertisement***
</div>
<div class="main">
<h1>***comic_name***</h1>
<h2>by ***author***</h2>
***todays_comics***
<br />
***first_day*** ***previous_day*** ***next_day*** ***last_day***
<br />
***comic_name*** is hosted on <a href="http://www.keenspace.com">Keenspace</a>, a free webhosting and site automation service for webcomics.
</div>
</body>
</html>

Copy and paste the code into a text editor. Save the files as indextemplate.html and dailytemplate.html respectively.
You should then upload them via FTP to your /workspace folder. Note that is is just the working directory /workspace, and NOT /workspace/webpages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Color codes:
Unanswered Questions
Answered Questions
Uncertain Answers (I haven't checked it out myself)

Q: How do I log into my Keenspace account?
A: You log in from http://siteadmin.keenspace.com
Remember that the username and passwords are case sensitive, which means 'Phalanx' isn't the same as 'phalanx'.

Q: How/When do I get my Keenspace username/password?
A: An indeterminate period of time after you've registered, you should get a confirmation email. You should go to the link provided and enter the code included in the email where it says so. Then sit back and and wait for Keen to send you the username/password. This may take the better part of a day/a few days so be patient! Whatever you do please don't post yet another mail asking why it hasn't arrived instantly. The forum will hate you for it.

Q: I'm not getting my confirmation/username/password emails!
A: Check that your mailbox has not filtered the mail out. You can also check the status of your password here

http://siteadmintest.keenspace.com/cgi- ... status.cgi

Kelly says: Hotmail and some popular web mails may be filtering out our emails. This is due to our ISP harboring some spammers. We'll keep an eye on it and yell at them if we start getting bounces all over the place.

Q: I got my Keenspace password but it doesn't work for SiteAdmin/FTP! What do I do?
A: This seems to be a recent bug. Request a new password from the Keenspace lost password facility and you should be fine. See next question for how to do this. (Sometimes it takes a while for the password to take)

Q: How do I change my Keenspace username/password?
A: You can NOT change your username. The only way to get a different username is to request a new account under the username you would like.

Passwords can now be changed and customised. You can do this at the Keen Lost Password facility (See top of page for link)

Q: I keep trying to log in a SiteAdmin. It accepts my password, but it just redirects me to the login page again! What's going on?
A: This is a sporadic problem that crops up from time to time. It's usually a problem with your browser and DOES also happen to browsers which have passed the cookie write test included in the login page. I've found sometimes that closing all windows and opening a new one jsut for login, as daft as that sound, generally works.

How do you know that you have this problem and have not just input your password incorrectly? Simple. If the password is incorrect, Keen will tell you so on the TRY AGAIN login page. If you're getting a plain page with no explanations, you've been hit.

Kelly says: Kisai's been planning on changing that so we don't use cookies. Many browsers have trouble with them, and alot of privacy firewalls like to strip 'em out.

Q: What are BOARDY and YDK (and Butch)?
A: Kelly says: Originally, all of 'Space and 'Spot was on Tor the Calculate (TOR), and we shared space. Eventually, 'Spot moved to several servers of their own and left TOR to us. TOR started to fail and we moved to KINGLUCA, followed by SCHLOCK. When SCHLOCK failed, we moved to BOARDY, and when BOARDY started to fill up, we brought in YDK. We also moved the forums to their own server, PDI.

When BOARDY started to fail at the hands of a bad ISP, we bought BUTCH and moved everyone to it. Recently, we moved the forums from PDI to SANDY, and are happy again.

Q: What are Keenspace tags for??
A: Keenspace tags are placeholders for information and/or pieces of code. They are usually contained within rows of triple asterisks (stars) like so: '***comic name***'. The tags are usually used to replace information that is repeated many many times, but is subject to change from time to time. This is to save time and effort so should any change occur on the site's part, there's no need to look for every occurrence of that particular bit of information and manually recode it. Please note that Keentags only work for the templates in the /workspace folder.

Q: How do I use the Keenspace tags??
A: Just insert the tags where you would normally insert the code. This is an example just to demonstrate. Don't take it literally, please:
Let's say that my comic is called Jaded, and my author name is Phalanx. On every page of the website, naturally there would be a header saying like: 'Jaded, By Phalanx'. Using Keentags, I'd code it in html this way-
<h1>***comic_name*** By ***author***</h1>
Autokeen will read this and output in an html file:
<h1>Jaded, by Phalanx</h1>
,since My comic name is recorded to be 'Jaded' and by authorname is 'Phalanx'.
But what if I decide the title should be 'The Jaded' instead of just 'Jaded'? All I have to do is change the comic_name value (I think it's from SiteAdmin) and request for a full update. Then, voila! Every page will have been updated with the correct header: ('The Jaded, By Phalanx') without me having to search through every page and changing every occurrence of 'Jaded' with 'The Jaded'.
(Updated: I hope this explains it clearly enough. Thanks to Das Charlotte, Yeas and all the others who helped out.)

Q: What does ***this tag*** do??
A: Atrus has an excellent updated taglossary here. It's not much use if you still don't know how tags work, though. Also see the sticky updated taglossary thread.

Q: Help! My tags aren't working!
A: Firstly check that the page is the public_html version and not the workspace version. Many people make that mistake. The workspace shows the tag in all its star-rowness, the public_html version shows what you should see.
If your tags seem right, but nothing is appearing in the public_html version, check the filenames and their extensions. Comics with the wrong filenames will not show up and the tags will be inserted as size 0 (And therefore invisible).

Q: What does the /public_html folder do?
A: This is where the actual html files a browser would read are stored. AutoKeen updates the contents of this folder through the workspace folder, though I've also be been told that you can upload you stuff directly to this folder if you aren't planning to update using AutoKeen. Mind you, only do this if you know what you're doing, and if you're not sure, make backups just in case.

Q: What does the /workspace folder do?
A: /workspace is where Autokeen finds the page templates, images, and other information it needs to generate the pages for the public html files.
(Courtesy of Das Charlotte)
It's also the location of the very important indextemplate.html and dailytemplate.html files.

Q: What does indextemplate.html do? Where can I find it?
A: This is the all-important html file that determines what your index page (Main pages, ie what you see when you go to 'http://yourcomic.keenspace.com) will display. Autokeen generates the actual html for the main page based on this file. This is also where you should use your Keenspace tags, BTW. If you aren't confident of what you're doing, save a backup copy of indextemplate before you edit it. Where do you find indextemplate? In the /workspace folder together with dailytemplate.html, of course.

Q: What does the dailytemplate.html do? Where can I find it?
A: This is the html file in your /workspace folder which will determine how your archive pages will looks like. It's similar to indextemplate, but is used to generate the many many pages (if you've done that many) for your archive. Also see the entry for indextemplate.html.

Q: How do I update manually?
A: There's an option to do that via SiteAdmin. Log in to SiteAdmin, and select the Manual Update option. Don't forget to upload all your comics into the workspace/comics folder before you do this. There are 3 kinds of updates available: 1)Regular 2)Index page only 3)Full Update. "Regular" is index and an archive page, "Index" is index.html, "Full" is everything. Pick the one that best suits your needs. Naturally, you pick 'Full' for the first time. Once this is done, the little queue bar at the bottom should show you how many people are there in the update queue.

When you turn comes, AutoKeen will update everything from the templates and searches for anything new, and update that too.)
(Thanks to Das Charlotte and the others for the help here)

Q: How do I update automatically??
A: Upload all your comics (dated correctly on the dates you want to update) into the /workspace/comics folder. For example, if today is 2003-06-09, and you want to update your comic on 2003-06-11, but you won't have access to a computer at that time, then upload the comic as 20030611.jpg and on the 11 th, AutoKeen will update it for you.
(Thanks to Recon Dye)

Q: What should I put in the comics folder (found in the workspace folder)?
A: Upload the your comics in to this folder. You need date-specific names for them, though.

Q: How should I name my comic files?
A : I think they're done by date, as in yyyymmdd.jpg.(e.g. 20030630.jpg), although I've seen cases where a name is added to the front (eg. comic20030609.jpg) and letters are added to the back. (eg. 20030609a.jpg).

Q: What do I put in the images folder?
A: Images used in the site that are not comics. Banners, buttons etc.

Q: What do I put in the webpages folder??
A: Other html files that aren't comic pages, say a cast page or a fan art gallery.
(Thanks, Yeas!)

Q: How do I 'bundle' text in comic pages??
A: See here for the answer

Q: Do I have to include the 'This site is hosted by Keenspace' link on my site? Can I change how it looks?
A: As Keen is providing the service for free, the least a Keenspacer can do is acknowledge it and provide a link to their site. So yes, you have to. However, I don't think they'll mind you changing the way it looks as long as you keep the meaning of the message the same, that is, 1)The service is provided by Keenspace 2)It's free 3)It's for webcomic artists 4)There is a link to http://www.keenspace.com

Q: How do I replace the ***next_comic***, ***first_comic*** tags etc with buttons?
A: Save the image files as "previous_day.jpg" (or any other image format) and repeat for other buttons (next_day, first_day, last_day). Upload it to your images folder in /workspace. AutoKeen will detect it and replace them with the buttons. See Atrus's Updated taglossary for more details.

Q: My comic isn't showing up in the Guide! What can I do?
A: IF your comic doesn't appear in the guide, it probably hasn't generated any hits yet. The alphabetic lists have two versions, one "with comics and newer than 30 days" and "all comics regardless of age and content" New comics will not show up in the former untill they have 1 comic and the site was manually or automatically updated.
(Cheers, Kisai!)

Q: How do I use the 'Edit Banner' option on SiteAdmin?
A: The Edit Banner option will not work in SiteAdminTest. It will, however, work in SiteAdmin2
http://siteadmin2.keenspace.com/cgi-bin ... /login.cgi
(Note, siteadmin2 should point to siteadmin, so ether should work).

The path you need to enter for your Banner path should have public_html in front. So, if my banner was in http://thejaded.keenspace.com/images/banner.jpg, I'd enter /public_html/images/banner.jpg in the field. It may take a few hours to a day for your banners to get active.

Checking back later will show you the banner and some info about it. You can also get the address to link your banner through the guide if you click on the Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac) option for the picture. You should always link your banner through the guide as not to inflate your webstats. Also, adding a Banner will make it visible from http://guide.keenspace.com

I can start an ftp connection to treadingground. It's there.

Are you using an old hosts file maybe? When you ping treadingground.keenspace.com what IP address does it return? It should be 66.220.2.7.

The I.P. address is correct. Maybe you misunderstood my concern... I can connect to my site through treadingground.keenspace.com, but I'm wondering if I should start using butch.keenspot.com instead.

Thanks...

BAH! Random dyslexia strikes again.

They're the same address. It doesn't hurt you either way because it's your username and password that get you into your site, not the domain name.

http://members2.keenspace.com webalizer logs (YDK missing a couple of days, Boardy all gone? Sometimes password rejected?)

Is there anybody we're supposed to tell if our password won't get us into members2, or just sit back and wait for it to resolve itself?

I seem to be unable to join - that is, to join in order to make a webcomic. If I click on "Join" in the Comics Index, I get a 404 - Page Missing.

...I'm getting frustrated - I've heard of the long lines to get a domain accepted, and I want to join KeenSpace as soon as I can to do so.

Thank you for your time.

Well, goddamn it. Thank you for telling me and saving me hours of frustration.

Until the signups are open, I think it would be a good idea to have the join page link to a "signups closed" announcement...

I'm actually surprised there's a link. The whole main site was lost when the primary server crashed. There's a contest to redesign the main site in General discussion.

Not for me. -_- Is there a new page for the manual updates or something? I've been looking everywhere, trying everything I can think of, but I can't get into the manual updates. This is bad, because I have some major errors on my index page that need to be fixed, and I can't upload my revised index unless I can get into the update center.

I understand that things go down on the net, and I'm not trying to be whiny or anything, I'm just wondering if you have an alternative place to do the manual updates or not. I really appreciate all the trouble you guys are going to just trying to keep this place running. Thank you! *gives milk and cookies and hugs to all*

1. Delete the banners you posted to the guide from your ftp site.
2. Let the banner entries in siteadmin2 go away.
3. Upload the banners against.
4. Resubmit them to the guide.

I too seem to be having some problems with Guide banners. I've removed the images in question from my site and let the Guide refresh itself and delete those banners. I've now added them back to my site and had the Guide add the banners back, but they're still showing as red x's in the Edit Banner screen.
