Finally found the Manga, along with a few of my missing ROD TV DVD's from Suncoast.

... why did no one think to warn me about the Yomiko Readman Fanservice present in Volume 1 of the Manga???

Heh!

You liked that too, huh?

Which do you prefer, the original OAV or the TV series?

I think the OAV kicks ass but the TV show has its moments.

Dennis

PS: Yes, I still have my shameless crush on the fictional Yomiko. Any girl with more books than I have is someone I wanna meet. :shucks:

Mmmm. Schoolgirl Yomiko Owns Me. There's also nothing wrong with a shameless crush on a fictional entity. *flatly* They tend to be a lot better to deal with than real ones, I've found ...

And I still say the OAV owns. I never got to see most of the TV series - as it was licensed all of, what, 5 eps in? - since I watch everything in Fansub. Thing is, when I was working at Best Buy, I used my Employee Discount to get a limited Edition Volume 1, which came in a case designed to hold all 7 DVD's that is shaped and looks like a leather-bound book. Then I lost that job, and couldn't AFFORD the other 6 volumes ...

Incidentally, the Nenene 'mini-poster' that came with one of those ROD TV volumes is ... yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah. 110% fanservice.

On the upside, if there ever is a large enough gathering of us, I can be counted on to show up with a large volume of choice anime (My DVD collection is still pretty damn large from my BB days, and most people salivate over my Fansub Archive when they see it). You can bet that ROD would be right up there at the top of the pile. Yes, ALL of it.

Ahhh...Yomiko! Yeah, if she were real, I'd ask her out in a second. :shucks:

Oh well, a fanboy can still daydream.

Regarding the TV series? It's worth watching whenever you get a chance to see it all. I only have a couple fansubs I bought at conventions as I don't know where to get them elsewhere.

Anyway, the series is good but the OAV is superb. The series kinda loses focus in the last 5-6 episodes and it seems like the writers were just trying anything at the end. The TV series gets better when Yomiko shows up about 1/3rd of the way in.

My anime collection is getting scary in size, I ought to list it here soon.

Ah, someone else who has the same DVD box that I do. ^_^ The coolest part is that it actually has room for *8* disks in it, and the TV series was only 7. I put the OAV in the first slot and the TV in the last 7.

I bought a copy of R.O.D., volume 3 on Monday night!

Haven't had a chance to read it yet but I hope to over the weekend. I'll share a review sometime next week.

I bought the OAV and the TV series volumes right off the shelves at the store or through work. I don't have any box for them but they're currently nicely arranged with the rest of my anime in a bookcase.

Just thought I'd post a few comments on R.O.D. #3

Overall, I liked it but it's still a continuation of the story which began in #2.

Yomiko is at a strange prep school, undercover as a teacher...although she rarely seems to teach anything. The Grade A kids and the lower class, Grade B kids are at war with each other.

Yomiko's mission is to find the secret underground library, which emerges like a monster and begins devouring everything in its path.

Most of this book delves into Yomiko's tragic past and the deep guilt she apparently still feels over what happened. A lot of the book has her powerless and wracked with guilt as the villain, her dead (or is he?)boyfriend's best friend.

There's an adversary introduced for the British Library, an order of Hermit Readers, who also seek out lost rare books. Hints are dropped that the Library isn't as beneficent as they seem.

Anyway, the book ends with the story still unresolved!

Yes, I like self contained stories and this is getting a bit drawn out.

I'm still curious to see how it all ends and the art is lovely, I just think the tale could be paced better is all.

It's still a good read but I liked volume #1 the most.

Dennis, when you look at the 'drawn out pacing issues', you also have to keep in mind the ORIGINAL format of the series.

This was not originally published in a volume format. Just in case you were not aware of how Manga generally gets published, every week, Manga Publishers put out medium-to-large books with many different series of Manga running in them. These range from the size of a good Cosmo all the way out to the size of a phone book (yeah. Phone book. I've personally handled one of these, it's astounding ... I'd KILL to have publications like that out here in the US ...).

Every week, you'd get a chapter of each of the Mangas currently running in a given publication, and for the most part, the stoy arcs ARE drawn out affairs that may easily cover the better part of 35-40 chapters, interspersed with smaller, 5-10 chapter 'mini arcs' or even the occasional self-contained chapter of 'sidestory'.

R.O.D. has a particularly rich backstory and plotwork, so you should really get used to the fact that ... a given arc is usually going to take the better part of 4 volumes to get done. (If you think that's long, Flame of Recca's got one arc that is easily somewhere around 10 volumes - yes, TEN - in length. YKK is even worse, with arcs that ... well, one could argue that the entire manga is just one long arc, but there's definate sub-arcs in it. Remind me to link you to that - there is no published version in the USA, but the translation is ongoing on the web. I think you'd like it, it's ... interesting.)

I am just glad that I don't have to read scanlations any more, without the net at home it can be a real pain getting my eyeballs on any of it. And it's not difficult for me to drop ten bucks at any given moment for one volume of manga. I was saying today that it's hard for me to get into any new anime because of the cost. I have to put a volume of FMA on layaway each time it comes out to pick it up a month or sometimes even two later. At least manga is less expensive. And yeah, I will read pretty much any ROD because I am just so in love with the concept and the characters.

Yeah, and after the long waits to get ElfQuest when I was younger, I will take comics/manga however I can get 'em.

Thanks for the information, S.W.

Yeah, I'm still a comparative newbie when it comes to this material. I was 33 or 34 years old when I first met Fred and she helped get me hooked on it. I knew what it was but didn't know where to begin learning about it and there really wasn't much available then anyway.

However, after roughly 8 years of actively reading this material (has it been that long?), I have taught myself quite a bit. I've seen the various sizes of Japanese manga and I know how it's published overseas. Unfortunately, I still don't know how to find scanlations.

I guess I was just thinking with my gaijin mentality...expecting a whole story at one chunk.

I am digging R.O.D., as a librarian/english major, I've been a rabid fan ever since I first saw the OAV. It is indeed a great concept and I like the deeper nature of the manga tales.

Scanlations aren't the easiest thing on the 'net to find ... I have a hard time of it occasionally myself, and I am a heavy consumer of the fan-made market as opposed to the license-made market. Fansubs are actually, somehow, EASIER to find these days. I think it's because there's still far less intrest in the printed medium than in the full multimedia realm (even if that IS changing, it takes time. Don't forget how many years it's taken us to get to the point that series shown in Japan are getting shown or released in the USA inside of 12 months later ...), and I also think it has to do with the fact that it's very easy to GET a raw video stream these days, but to get raw Manga, especially to-date chapters as opposed to full volumes ... well, someone in Japan has to buy it and scan it, and that's clear and obvious copyright infringement over there, whereas anyone in the USA with a bit of tech knowledge can probably catch Japanese Satelite TV signals and rip the eps as they air.

As for length of time : Don't feel so bad. I've been a fan of the genre for close to a decade now ... granted, that means I got into it just as I was finishing up high school, but still, it does make one go "Wow. Has it really been this long? Is it POSSIBLE that these kids really don't know Slayers?"[/quote]

You know, with how this thread's going, I think we should contemplate finding a good anime con that we can all reach (something in the center of the USA, maybe Ohayocon), and just forming our own sub-con inside of it, because I get this funny feeling we'd all hit it off wonderfully, even if we were living on No-Doze for a few days. ^_^;;

Due to a decided inability to fly anywhere barring extreme crisis, those cons are somewhat out of my operational range ......
