I have a different stance because of my country -- in here (Finland) it's mandatory (meaning you can choose from military service lasting 6, 9 or 12 months, 13 months of unarmed service or you go to jail). I was the full 12 months, became an NCO and stayed there for another year as an instructor. My branch was Anti-Aircraft Defence with these lovely machines ( http://www.aeronautics.ru/nws002/bukm.htm ) and I grew up a lot in those years. Though I will unlikely find myself in a state of war, I like to keep up the "credible defence", especially in these times when Russia has (accidentally) crossed over to our national airspace ;)
I think that even if the service teaches you to kill, it also teaches many other things; respect, teamwork, obedience and humbleness. And you don't have to think much for that 6/9/12 months :)

I find it quite amusing that the SA-11 AA weapon system you're using is a Russian design, being used to defend against Russian aircraft ;)

This goes offtopic, but yes, it's kinda funny. But don't forget the Stingers US sent to the Afghans in the 70-80's :)

More offtopic: The system has IFF feature (and guess which planes it sees "friendly") but I think it was switched off :)

Today marks my second trip to MEPS up in Albany. i finally got everything squared away, the police thing isn't an issue, my facebones aren't going to be a problem, and all i need to do is get my braces off, which i'll do before the end of the month.

I didn't get sworn in because the facebone documentation has to be red by the doctor who "didn't have the time" today, so i'll get my next, and hopefully final appointment on thursday.

after that, i just have to worry about the fitness test, which i'll ace because i'm working on it. i have to do twelve push-ups and run one mile in 8 minutes to get in. after that i ship out to basic, then after the nine weeks i'll go to Ft. Knox for AIT. or do both Basin and AIT at Ft. Knox. either way, i'm as good as in.

each round trip costs my recruiter/the Government $50 in gas, and God knows how much in food and the hotel bill, which comes from the Taxpayers, so, i'm sorry for wasting your taxes, but i promise i'll be worth it. if you don't pay taxes, then screw you.

a few things; when the service liason sends you to lunch, it's never a good thing. make sure to have your braces out before going to MEPS, and finally, the hamburgers and french fries they serve in the cafeteria are the best.

alright man.. you're on my dime now. I want you to kick ass and take names in basic. Don't puss out, don't try to pull any serious shit, and keep the faith.

Good luck!

Just do me a favor and DON'T let a Humvee roll over on you. It tends to screw your back for life.

I know this because a friend of mine was gonna be career millitary until said accident now hes tech support for the Navy/Airforce. So much for a promising career as an MP.

Hopefully i'm going to be in a tank, so anything that i have to worry about rolling over me is something that everyone else is going to be worried about, too.

This is going to sound silly Maxillary, but thank you. I have a great respect for anyone who serves in our armed forces, no matter what conflict they served in. Good luck, stay tough, and let's hope you don't get awarded a purple heart if you catch my drift ;) .

P.S. Yahweh Ackbar! That's friggin' great!

You mean that I didn't think he had a promising career before?? No he had wanted to be an MP fron the time he was in middle school I belive. He would have made a damn good one too. Guy is 6'8" and at the time built like a brick. He has had to let himself slip cause he can't really exersize anymore. At least he is working with the millitary in one form though so I suppose it aint all bad.

Well, best of luck to you. I don't always beleive that the wars America fights are truly justified, and I sometimes find it embaressing that you our allies tend to loose more soldiers by accident than through enemy action, but I have a great deal of respect for the individual men and women on the feild.

Don't worry, we'll keep the Paras out of trouble. they can ride home on my tank after their drinking binges.

very few wars can truly be justified through moral reasoning. but many can be justified through practical reasoning. justification is a relative truth.
