another semester means another rant from M

Post by Mvmarcz »

Just a rant...ignore if ya want

I those of you who may have heard am taking a screen printing class in this my last semester. My teacher told me for once what we do is all up to us :) but she'd LIKE it to be commercial. So I thought GREAT! I can make some junkRIOT and/or pin-up shirts :D. I made 7 thumbnails (though the way I do them they're roughs that are like 1 step away from being a finished peice but whatever). Imma scan em later I'm at school right now and I hate the scanners here.
Anyway so the thumbnails were as follows:

A Taco-Hut ad featuring chris' head in a sumbrero licking his lips in a cute fashion and a large Taco next to him with the caption of: MMM mmm Taco Hut-Now that's a good taco!

A simple pinup of Lina...witty caption to be added later

A sillouette of Lina Chris and Alice with my little comic tagline of "One past will shape their future"

the logo...plain and simple

Panel 2 from this page http://junkriot.comicgen.com/d/20050607.html caption and all because it's my favorite

A pair of pretty lips with the caption "pin-ups rule the world"

A sillouette pin-up with the same caption as above.

Ok now for a little school history. I never used pin ups at all in my school stuff until last spring...I've been here for 3 years...

I show my teacher my thumbnails and said I didn't know which one I wanted to do yet (I wanted to ask my precious forumites before I chose :P )
She then proceeds to tell me that I need to stray from this pin-up thing. That they remind her of the white sillouettes in trucker mudflaps. to which I replied "those ARE pin-ups...."
Then the two other girls in class( the class is mostly guys-they liked the one of Lina :D) start trying to spout how pin-ups are degrading to women....and that my friends as you may guess is one of my buttons.....my teacher stopped me from arguing my point about it...and just told me to just do the taco ad-but not even that she says I should just do the pic of Chris' head in the sumbrero and cute as it is...why she gotta hate on my pinups?
Pinups are by very nature commercial...it's what she wanted...I've hardly ever used them in my school work...why must she attack them this way? Then I told her that people LIKE my pin ups and that I'm planning a book soon...

and then

my teacher

laughed in my face....

._. and moved on to the next person's thumbnails...which she approved right away....

she used to be the department head but she stepped down last year...thank god

she's also the teacher who told me during the end of semester evaluation for grades my first semester less than a week after my grandfather died that I should just get over it cause people are always gonna die.

she made me cry ;_; I just wanted her to grade my color wheel dammit

what a bitch. don't worry about her. we all know that your artwork and pinups are kickass. I had the same feeling before. Like, my art teachers would say that my artwork wasn't as good as someone else's because their was aiming for realism and mine wasn't. (I'm not into life drawings) I don't aim for accuracy and love exaggeration when drawing the female form. Since then, I hated art classes. I felt that they try to teach you one way instead of aiming at inspiring students make their OWN way. Anyway, don't worry about her. You'll have one semester with her, then you'll be out of there. And your work will still be great, and she'll still be a bitch for saying that to you.

Don't sweat it. Everyone has different views, but some are real asses about it. Those kind of people deserve a tight slap in the face.

Perhaps she had issues about using the female body for commercial purposes and wanted something more original...erotism is used to sell everything nowadays, after all... it's the only explanation I can think of, at least :-? there are more polite ways of saying that, though.

Edit:

yeah what I couldn't understand is that she acted like all I'd ever done on any of my projects was use a pretty girl infact I've only ever used 1 in an assignment but for the art show last year I turned in 3 classic style pinup ads done in pastel and prisma color...they were great and clearly ART....so that's 4 pinups over 3 years...and when she first saw my pinups last year she thought it was great that I was a pin up enthusiest and she even gushed about vargas alittle to me. And now all of a sudden...bam! I can understand her wanting me to try to be original but she told me I could do what I wanted and then turned around and told me to do what she wanted....

um it's reqiured and it's my last semester and I'm not a baby....I'm not just gonna duck out of a class cause my teacher's unfair...if I did that I'd still be in highschool...

allow me to add...since the rant is out of my system and I know how unfair life is...

She can laugh now...
but in a few years when I'm a famous pin-up artists I'll be the one laughing in her face all the way from the house that pin-ups built

Jeeves! my devious glasses please....

Ugh.

Just...ugh.

To ME, if you're marketing something like a comic/graphic novel, doing a pinup is par for the course. Heck, look at movies! A lot of the posters could (and have) doubled as pinups.

And in YOUR case it's even more approprete to do the pinup thing...because...well, you're M2. You've caught the Keenspace pinup nitch.

AND I want to walk up to that teacher and slap her for laughing at your ambitions. That is wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. Teachers...especially ART teachers--should not laugh or otherwise belittle other people's ambitions. They should be encouraging, not...not like what she did. If she wanted to properly judge your work she should have asked what you were marketing and measure how effective your work would be from that standpoint.

Wow, harsh art teacher there M2. This just reinforces my thoughts on art, specifically you can't teach it. You can teach someone to draw, but that doesn't mean they can create art. Same goes for all other artistic disciplines. It's also the reason I stayed away from art classes, the teachers negelect the technical skill, drawing, sculpting, whatever, in favor of trying to cultivate their style of art in their students.

Since I'm at a Christian university, I know exactly what you're talking about. If she can't get that the ability to draw sexy women is an extremely marketable skill, she's out of touch.

I was going to say, get over it you whiner, teachers show you what reality is like because your bosses may be just like them... if you can handle teachers, you can handle anyone.

Then you mentioned this...

So very true. It almost makes me rethink about majoring in Art.

About your teacher, I've had some like that.

Once, in Watercoloring II, I was almost done painting the final project. My teacher came up while I was finishing up, and mentioned to me:
"I don't really like the colors you're using."

I smiled and turned to her, with a smile and sweet voice, said:
"Well, ma'am, I don't like the colors on your blouse."

Needless to say, the remainder of the class was not pleasant.

But GOD it was worth it.

Ooh, that's a good one. I was thinking about the one with the "runes." Aah, forget it.

Although it doesn't apply quite as well as I thought.
