Need help! On speech bubbles! And stuff!

Post by Levi-chan »

Gah! Need help!

I'm starting chapter two of my comic now, and am thinking of how I'm gonna pull it off. See, I started chapter one with first-person narratives and a picture (see first attachment).

Now, I'm thinking of adding speech bubbles to it for the second chapter. What I'm worried about is a.) it will break the flow of the comic; b.) it'll be too cluttered; c.) I'll lose some of the focus. (See attachment 2)

So...what do you think, guys?

Cheers!

Hmm... the bubbles don't seem to match the picture very well. What if you just had the text without the bubbles and maybea little pointer?

You're being way too paranoid. It's just fine. In fact, they're less obtrusive than usual, thanks to the faded colours of the artwork and the translucentcy of the bubbles.

Font's a bit small, though. On a high res screen, it'd be awfully hard to read.

Phalanx: Well, I tried it with the lines - it looks okay. :)

J. Fagin: Maybe I am being a bit paranoid, Joel. ;) What I'm worried about is if it's okay to change from a narrative to one with speech bubbles midway. Would it...break stuff?

I'll think about it though. Thanks for the heads-up!

I think, on the new version, the bubbles are too unobtrusive now that they've lost their borders. They're almost invisible. I'd try reducing the translucency a little to compensate.

The font should be more than twice that size. Keep the word balloons as you had them. Transparent word balloons without borders are REALLY hard to read. Did you do that in illustrator or inkscape?

I feel like pointers get in the way maybe you should try my keen noir bubble thing... just make your bubbles with the marquees and feather them and fill them with a low opacity.

but also i like the way your comic is now...alot :) but you changing it probably wont make me like it less

Now....GIVE ME MORE HOPSCOTCH!

I liked the feel of the first one more myself. The scene speaks for itself and the speech you want to add isn't of any real importance. In fact I think the first shows a more quiet and interesting type of conversation. If two people are comfortable just being with eachother without the need to talk every second it's a good sign. As a result the first one showed a more mature and relaxed atmosphere between them. That and it's a pretty picture. The bubbles only get in the way.

...Or I could be looking too far into this. If you must have the second one be sure to do as Faub says. I agree with him on it. Text bigger but keep the outlines.

Hmm... the borderless feathered bubble sounds like a good idea...

I agree with Chibi... I like the picture better without the speech bubbles... I think that basically the speech bubbles say much the same thing as the nerration so that you only need one or the other, and I think the narration says it better.
Warning: this poster is addicted to ellipses...

I have a web comic called Tears of Eternity if you don't look you'll never know if you would have liked it.

Agreed, and I remember talking about this when you pitched. If you're going to use speech, ease up on the narration, and vice versa. As for the look, I like the bubbles in the first pic. The text needs to be bigger, though.

I'm going to hijack this thread a moment to ask how you make speech bubbles in GIMP?

Use the ellipse tool to select the area to become the bubble. Fill with white. (or whatever) Then make sure to select the color for the border, then go to Edit/Stroke Selection. You can tweak the options and there you go. For the tail I use the paths tool, Select/select from path/ Edit/stroke selection. Then just erase the line seperating the bubble from the tail.

There might be an easier way but that's how I do it. (whenever I decide to do it...)

The text is too black in comparison with the background. Try it more translucent, perhaps - more like the top & bottom text, which isn't as stark.

If this comic is going to be purely online, consider white text on a darkened shading, which reads easier than black on muddy brown.

I love the second pic better. ^_^ It gives a more esthetic feel to your comic.
