Questionable Content and Faye

Post by M_Northstar »

I think you're being too harsh on Faye. It is true that she is very violent at times, but it is clear that she was hurt something fierce in the past, which made her the way she is. That, of course, is no excuse, but we have seen that she herself is aware of her issues, and is actively trying to overcome them. Her struggle against her instincts runs like a red thread through the comic, and frankly you miss a huge part of the story by not acknowledging things like this comic.

The difference between an abusive personality and Faye is that to the abusive personality, the abuse is the primary response, which empowers him/her by having a visible effect on the world. To Faye, the violence is secondary, a learned reflex that hitherto has been successful in keeping her safe. Of course, it has also kept her alone, but until now that hasn't been a problem. Now, though, as she opens up to Marten, and as her increased openness also allows in Dora and Raven, the old reflexes are revealed for the handicap they are, and she is actively trying to abandon them.

Maybe. But a lot of abuse is learned behavior. I suspect at least one of Faye's parents was an abuser, for Faye to have this as such an ingrained habit. And yes, she feels remorse... but she's not stopping herself. Nor does she really see herself as being at fault for hitting Marten. "He deserved it" is the most common line.

Hell, what do you do when you see a guy smack a girl and he turns around and says "Well she deserved it."? You call the cops, more often than not. Even if the girl DID deserve it, when a guy smacks a girl, it's wrong. Why is it any less wrong for Faye to hit Marten?

Nor do I see Faye restraining herself from hitting him.

In fact, think of a fairly old incident... Faye learns of a girl who basically broke Marten's heart being in the cafe. She goes up with a half gallon of milk and sprays it all over the girl.

Dora herself stated that under different circumstances that would have been a firing offense. What are the different circumstances? If Dora didn't know Marten and hadn't just heard Marten's story. That's literally it. In fact, that girl could easily have called the cops for assault and battery for that milk incident. She could have sued for the ruined clothes. She could have ruined Faye's life after that, because of a moment of pique.

It could easily escalate into something horrible. So long as she refuses to accept responsibility for her actions, she could next possibly kick Marten in the nuts because he "copped a feel" (he brushed by her on the way to the bathroom or something) and she'd just go "oops" and not think twice of it. Nor do I see her willingly going to anger management or a psychologist (some of them can be halfway decent, I watched one help a good friend of mine recently) to deal with her problems.

But this is just my interpretation of Faye. You might not see her abuse as being abuse. That is your right.

After all, the one thing I've stated before is this: Don't rely on me to tell you a comic is good or not. Read it for yourself to decide. Likewise, just because I feel something is so in a comic doesn't mean it is if you read it. Everyone has their own opinions and beliefs.
