Squiddy's Weapon of Choice
A bunch of my friends are getting in to this whole airsoft thing as an alternative to paint ball. Apparently there is less mess, the guns are more accurate, and its not as full of shithead kids.

Yes, this gun is based off the gun Jessie Ventura used in "Predator". The gun he used was the General Electric made M-134 7.62mm minigun.
As far as technical terms go, gatling gun refers to the gun designed and built in the 1880s by Mr. Gatling. In the 1960s, his step great-grandson redesigned the gun to use an electric motor to drive the barrels instead of a crank. He dubbed his gun the Vulcan. The vulcan pattern gun is used primarily on aircraft and in the Navy's CIWS. In the 70s, GE developed a smaller, man portable version of the vulcan gun and called it the minigun.
It is normally pintle mounted, or turret mounted, as the gun is heavy, and the recoil is nightmareish for a human. GE tried to develop a squad level version of the gun, called the XM-214, but they had to slow the barrel rotation down and reduce the velocity and size of the rounds. Combined with this, battery technology in the 70s ment the battery pack to run this gun was heavier than the weapon itself, and the average soldier really had no hope of lugging one around in a combat situation.
The airsoft gun is a much smaller 6mm, and since it uses air, the recoil is almost nil. The weapon itself is still 20lbs, and the PPP version still requires a pair of 20oz CO2 tanks to operate. There was a version put out by a Japanese company that had an air compressor built in, but you still had to lug around a rather large 24 volt battery.
Still.. given the chance and the money, I'd pounce on one of these guns like Kiki on the script for a the live action Overfiend movie.

What was the price range on the gun anyhow? I'd think it was probably quite expensive...squidflakes wrote:Yes, this gun is based off the gun Jessie Ventura used in "Predator". The gun he used was the General Electric made M-134 7.62mm minigun.

no, the tech term is either GE M-134 Minigun or XM-234Surprise Chibi Inside! wrote:I think the technical term is Gatling gun, am I right?kingofthemorlocks wrote:Predator reference, man. That looks like the gun Jesse Ventura used in that movie.
(the differences are in caliber, 7.62mm for the M-134 & 5.56mm for the XM-234 & rate of fire, 6,000 rounds a minute with the arrestor cards pulled on the M-134 and 12,000 rounds a minute with the arrestor cards pulled on the XM-234), and yes, irl every 5th round is a tracer

You're thinking of the XM-234 SAW, which was the 70s test bed chambered in 5.56mm that lead to todays SAW.
The micromini was the XM-214, and its ROF was more along the lines of 4,000. However, there was a card that controlled burst rate. I don't know if it could kick up to a cyclic rate of 12,000, but I most certianly wouldn't want to be holding it when that happened.
As for every fifth round being a tracer, well that depends on your supply chief doesn't it
For pintle and vehicle mounted guns pulling anti-vehicle or anti-air duty, the load out was usually tracer, AP, incendairy, incendairy, tracer, ect.
Anti-personell was limited by the convention to fully jacketed slug and tracers only.

They're also set up to have more realistic size, shape and weight. Plus you don't have a bushel-sized hopper to fill with paint grenades. If you're even vaguely interested in realism or shooting as a practical skill it's much better. And less expensive and painful than Simmunitions.squidflakes wrote:A bunch of my friends are getting in to this whole airsoft thing as an alternative to paint ball. As for the tiny dick comments from guys I have a stock reply:I keep telling them I want no part of this.. that is, until I found the gun that I want. Oh me brothers and sisters, what a piece of hardware this is. Behold! The Gun For Squid!
