This... Could Complicate Matters
For any of you that have been on Mars for the last 2 hours, a new Pope has been elected.
Ratzinger...
damn damn damn damn damn
Depending on who you believe, he may be quite adament about "sexual morality" and we all know what that means.
Time will tell.

Ahhh the pope.. I don't think there has been this much furvor over a figure head since the British Royal family.
Honestly, what exactly can the Pope do these days? Tell all Catholics to do, or not do something? That group isn't in power like it was back in the 60s and before.
The sexually open among us have far more to worry about from Christan Fundimentalists and Suburban Soccer Society than the pope.
My take on it anyway.. heh.. old men in funny hats. Man, where the hell do I sign up for THAT job.

True enough; although he could set a tone. Most of the Fundementalists in this country are Protestent anyway. However, it's not just this country that I'm thinking of... I'm more concerned about developing nations and their need for contriception, etc.

Funnily enough, this very sort of discussion has been going on on another board I post to and a senior Cardinal has come out and suppoerted the use of condoms to fight aids in Africa.

How many Catholics voted for the Shrub because of the Vatican's instructions? Remember it was Ratzinger who called for the denial of communion to if not excommunication of pro-choice politicians. He's more likely than his predecessor to throw in with the Christians who want the war between the cross and the crescent.squidflakes wrote:Ahhh the pope.. "It is the difference between the unknown and the unknowable, between science and fantasy - it is a matter of essence. The four points of the compass be logic, knowledge, wisdom and the unknown. Some do bow in that final direction. Others advance upon it. To bow before the one is to lose sight of the three. I may submit to the unknown, but never to the unknowable. The man who bows in that final direction is either a saint or a fool. I have no use for either."

Very funny actually. But where is the Czech pope?squidflakes wrote:POPE HEIL! POPE HEIL! ;P
And is it just me, or is it kind of funny that we now have a german pope taking over the office of a polish pope.

And I guess because of the silly prophecies if your name is Peter and you live in Rome or used to live in Rome or once passed through Rome or had someone in your family from Rome or once ate at Ceasar's Palace or you get the idea, anyway, then there'll be no way you can be pope. But hey, that can't be any worse than being screwed out of the pope chair for being born with tits... 8)

Some would consider that a blessing you know, to never having to worry about being stricken with a massive horde of the worlds most annoying fans.
Just curious though, on that point, does anyone know if people run to be the pope?.... or if they pick someone who decides he doesn't want to be the pope, can he decline [before actually becoming the pope]. Like getting a call back from your second-choice job when you've just landed your first choice?

Also, a candidate can decline the office, but they are suggested to accept.

They do not run for office in the official sense and the cardinals all vote for whomever they want on the first run, which could be themselves even. They then vote over and over and over and over until someone has a 2/3 majority, then they finally stop voting and the elect then says "I accept" and then they go announce the new pope.Sweet or Sour wrote: Just curious though, on that point, does anyone know if people run to be the pope?.... or if they pick someone who decides he doesn't want to be the pope, can he decline [before actually becoming the pope]. In the unoffical sense, however, you better believe they run. Those interested need to garner favors from the mass of voting cardinals to even come close having any sort of majority or notice on the first few votes to stand a chance to gain majority in the successive votes.
Hence the odds of a pope being elected and then declining are pretty slim, I dunno if there is even a single historical precident or not where a pope actually was voted in and then declined.
