Keenswim 2005

Post by Glarryg »

http://keenswim.keenspace.com

It begins! This is the official "casting call" for submissions to Keenswim 2005, continuing the tradition of such events as Bikeeni Summer and Keenlace. I'm going to try something that I don't think has been done before and invite both 'Spacers and 'Spotters to join the same event, in an effort to generate exposure for the entire Keeniverse. Here's the rules:

1. Have an established comic on the web, or have an original character.

2. Draw your character(s) engaging in summer-related merriment, be it at the beach, in the backyard, in New Orleans, wherever. Keep it fun, as always. Color and grayscale are both acceptable. Try to use about the same size/memory limitations you use for your comic; remember, a gigantic picture that stretches off the edge of the screen and takes a half hour to load will turn the audience away.

3. Crossover art is strongly encouraged! We'd love to see the Checkerboard Nightmare hanging out with Ugly Girl, or the Newshounds playing beach volleyball with the Newscast. Get together and collaborate! I only ask that you actually work with the creator(s) off all the character(s) you "cross over" with, so that nobody's intellectual property gets stolen.

4. Send your pics to keenswim2005@yahoo.com with an obvious subject line (using the words "Keenswim" and "submission" would be a pretty easy way to make sure I don't delete it as spam). In the body of the message, give me your name as you want it to appear on the site, your comic's name and URL, the name(s) of the character(s) in the pic, and where they are. A brief description of what's going on in the pic is optional; I can add one myself if you don't want to.

5. As moderator, I reserve the right to refuse any pic if I feel it is not up to the standards of the event. Likewise, a picture that is too big or too memory-heavy, one that looks like it was scrawled off during math class with little or no attention to quality, or one that is pornographic or otherwise offensive may be refused or returned to the creator for editing. Them's the breaks.

6. Get drawing!

7. Visit the site at http://keenswim.keenspace.com

Unfortunately, for those of you who posted images in the thread "Swimsuit Edition," in which we first discussed this, I'm going to have to ask you also to submit your pics to the above address. This is so that I get all your information right, and because there were some pics in that thread that people said they didn't intend for the event, so I don't want to go thorugh and guess and end up posting something that was supposed to be on the site.

Have fun with this, and submit away!

Glarryg

*EDIT:* clarification on Rule #3
*EDIT 2:* added a clause on the end of Rule #1, and added location element to Rule #4

Does it have to be a piece of stand alone art or imagery?

I've got a particular four panel strip that probably fits this really well already which I'd probably post along. It's yet to actually go up on the site, so it's not really an old piece of work yet. :)

For Cheese sakes, guys! You must have a comic already, probably with some form of an archive. I don't think he meant it as exclusionary, just that it can't be purely fanart.

"Established" simply means that it has to have existed for a while, which could be merely weeks (my own comic is only a couple months old). Since this gig will last all summer, it's entirely possible for some one to come up with a comic idea today, pitch it to Keenspace, start it, and have enough "establishment" by the actual Summer Solstice to submit artwork.

Just like Escushion said, the idea is that the actual creator(s) of the character(s) submit the work, and not have random people submit fan art.

*EDIT:* And, yes, a multiple-panel summer-related comic will work, too.

Saying you want only "established" comics when you've been only online for a few weeks is very hypocritical. Who decides who is established and who is not?

Perhaps my idea of establishment has to do with the recognition of more than just the community, rather than merely being only?

Well, I don't want to sound standoffish, but since it's my project, I'm the one who decides what's established and what's not. You're perfectly welcome to set your own standards and write whatever rules you want wherever else you please. As it is, within this arena, I'm interpreting the words I wrote, like so:

When they finish a building, they put that "Est." sign on it to show when it started existing. As long as a comic exists, then, like a building, it's been "established." I'm sorry that wasn't clear enough in my last post.

What she said. Relax, guys. It's just for fun. Glarryg already said it could be short-term. Again, as he said, the idea is that it's by the authors, not just fanart.

Now I've just got to decide what everyone will be doing...

Okies...I've sent mine off. Might as well get in early, eh?

Just don't forget mine like someone else did. I'm not mentioning any names but his initials are Spriteville... ;)

So this goes up about June 21, eh? Ironic that my Keenswim entry will go up in the middle of winter :)

I have a question! What if someone, um, happens to have a Keenspace site that updated for two and a half years with 700+ comics...but she hasn't used it for quite some time and her current comic is indie-pendent? She still likes the Space community quite a bit, and posts here on occasion.

I ask because I sort of feel like doing some kind of summertime-themed illustration anyway, and if there's an event it can be part of, well, all the better, no?

I just was under the impression that this was going to be an open event, but it doesn't really feel like it. It seems like there are too many rules.

Examples:
Mandatory comic link
Captions (or one will be "provided")
Censoring for adult or other "offensible" content (whatever that is).
Even the suggestion to "Keep it fun". Comics and their characters are not always lighthearted.

*shrug*

I suppose it doesn't really matter to most people, but I personally have been thoroughly discouraged from participating. :-?

Look:

1. Have a comic.

2. Your characters in swimsuits. Know how to compress files.

3. We encourage crossovers, so ask someone else if they'll go in it with you.

4. Send the drawings to keenswim2005@yahoo.com with the word "KeenSwim" in it. Give your name and url and, if you wish, a title/caption.

5. Draw it well and no pornography or hate drawings.

That's all. Relax. This is supposed to be fun. These aren't fascist restrictions, just some guidelines that are complete no brainers. If a caption REALLY bothers you, I'm sure an exception can be made. This man's running the show, so if he wants PG 13, that's his perogative. If you wanna draw porn, cool, but it can't be in this event.

So everyone please stay calm. We'll get through this.
