Holy Plagarism, Batman!
Hey, guys. Long time no see.
I know I've mentioned before that I do some writing online and I've won some money. This weekend I won some more...$100, in fact, first place in the Valentine's Day contest over at literotica.com
Okay, but that's besides the point. My point is that I've been plagarized...twice in one week! I can't even believe it, because these people are theiving the story that gained me most of my readership. I suppose that's the problem with writing, but has anyone seen this at all with webcomics? I'm kinda curious. I wouldn't think anyone would be dumb enough to plagarize a webcomic...but then, I wouldn't think anyone would be dumb enough to plagaize my work, either.
Anyone know?

Welcome back GoT. We've missed you. Sorry to hear about that. I know it's frustrating. I've seen strips rip their styles and ideas from other strips and I feel for the original creators, especially when the ripoff generates more readership than the original. That said, ideas work in weird ways. I've come up with ideas for what I thought would be totally original stories, not told anyone and find out later somebody else had the exact same idea. Are you sure they ripped you off or could it be an unlucky coincidence?

Oh, I don't need any sort of legal action. I've got a pack of rabid fans
Seriously, the first plagarist suffered several choice comments from my readers and backed off faster than you can blink. The second is currently being taken care of. She actually took my story, changed the main character names, and turned it into fan fiction for some TV show called Once and Again. Unfortunately, she missed some of the name changes, which started a chain of suspicion. The owner of the site found out how to contact me and asked me about my work. When I told her it was stolen, she informed me she would be taking it down and banning the plagarist. It is frustrating, though. That's for sure.

Seems like a lot of internet writers get their stuff stolen. What is with that? Does it happen that often in print? Well...I suppose it does. But I wonder if it's as blatant.
Well, there is one case in particular that I'm a little leery about. It's in regards to another keenspace comic, actually- http://pangolin.keenspace.com/story.html I mean, the resemblance is uncanny. I'm sure it'd diverged quite a bit by now, but the premise and even some of the art are a bit too familiar.

Doesn't really matter how you spell it. As long as people understand what you're saying, they get the point. Rather poignantly, I might add.Toxic wrote:Plagiarism </spelling nazi>
Dude, I had to track this bitch down through three goddamn sites! I told her if she didn't remove my work from every place she'd put it, my attorney would be contacting her.
Isn't it just my luck that my mom knows an attorney? ^^

Ah plagarism. I remember when some of my writings back in high-school got plagarised.
One of the few instances where having a lawyer for a father was the best thing in the world.
I'm incredibly anti-plagarism as a result of that.
I feel for you, Tarot. I still remember how it feels when you get that choking fire rise up inside to see someone blatantly steal your work.

I assume print doesn't have plagiarism issues to quite the same extent as the Internet, primarily because it lacks the luxury of "copy and paste".MixedMyth wrote:Seems like a lot of internet writers get their stuff stolen. And also because if you tried to take something unoriginal to a publishing company, chances are they'd catch it and refuse to publish it. Can't have nasty thievery messing up their good name.Cope wrote:I assume print doesn't have plagiarism issues to quite the same extent as the Internet, primarily because it lacks the luxury of "copy and paste".MixedMyth wrote:Seems like a lot of internet writers get their stuff stolen.
