Copyright Stickers??? Huh?

Post by Meljen »

Has anyone heard of professional newspaper comic artists using Copyright stickers for their comic? The artist for 'Buckle' mentioned this in his walkthrough on how he does his strips. Is this something the artist makes, or do the Syndication companies send them to you once the strip is officially copyrighted?

Been wondering this for a while...

Any strip you make is automatically copyrighted to you. Just make sure to write it somewhere on the strip (most usually in the gutters, the white space between the panels) and/or on your page (usually at the very bottom, around the "This comic's hosted by Keenspace...").

The Syndicates pretty much own an artist's work when they both reach an agreement and sign a contract; that's why they add the Copyright to their names (as in c King Features Syndicate). Since you are not in a syndicate, the copyright for the comic is yours. Unless, of course, you're using material (images, background, etc.) from another source (such as those Megaman sprites) and then you MUST give them credit as per the Keenspace rules. For the example above, you'd put somewhere the Megaman Sprites are copyright of Capcom or whoever does them.
Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.

I would assume this person uses stickers because they're easy to print and he can put them on his comics sideways without needing to use glue or something. It would be much easier than writing them out by hand and they would be consistent, readable and generally accurate. If you do a comic a day for 365 days, print out 365 stickers. When you run out of stickers, you're on the next year.

Or, it you use the computer to make your comic, you could just cut-and-past it right in,

Yeah, I do all of my text like copyright and most lettering, etc. on Photoshop or Flash.

I had just heard about the stickers and wondered if anyone else knew about them. :D

Thanks!

I believe when you submit comics to a newspaper you submit your originals for them to photocopy. At least that's the way it's depicted in Liberty Meadows. So a sticker would make sense.

It's all really quite simple, just copyright yourself and use stickers to paste yourself to your comics.

But if you're hairy... You'll have painful problems with that...

I add a copyright thing to everything I do. I have too many friends who have had their stuff stolen by people. :p Not that my stuff is worth stealing but hey--it's MY stuff! XD Not anyone else's!
