To me, Shrek's biggest crime was setting itself up as iconoclast but ultimately degenerating into the sort of sappiness it supposedly parodied. If it was meant to be a pastiche, it was a very clumsy one. Otherwise, I enjoyed the film immensely; it's just that the ending made me pass out in a pool of my own vomit.
Terotrous wrote:Monsters' Inc is probably Pixar's second weakest film, so I don't think the fact that it lost to Shrek is any sort of controversy.
Seriously speaking, neither do I. I just did some fatuous trivia dropping to see how people would react.
Monsters' Inc is probably Pixar's second weakest film
Poopyhead.

All in all, it comes down to your own opinion of what's better - which is why I made the topic.
Many of my friends love Shrek more than Pixar's 'best.' Then again, while I reeeeeeeeally liked Toy Story, I actually like Monsters Inc. and/or A Bugs Life. Aw hell, what am I saying - Toy Story was lovely. And I totally agree about the Jessie scene. ;____________;
All I know is: Pinnochio in a THONG? OH GAWD, THE HILARITY! I KNOW THAT MADE ME LAUGH! SUCH NOVELTY! And OH -- SHREK AND FIONA CHOSE TO BE UGLY AT THE END? I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING A LIGHT YEAR AWA-- *gets shot*
Still, Shrek is very successful, and ya can't argue with that. Whatever you prefer, I guess!

I like Ewan McGregor, too. Wheee.
The fact that they're pimping Robin Williams seems like a bad sign. Shark Tale mostly pimped its all star cast, and it got rather mediocre reviews. It was successful at the box office, but nowhere near the level of Finding Nemo or Shrek 2.
And people tell me I look like Ewan McGregor. *hint hint*

Does anyone remember that old warner bros. cartoon where the little taxi cab wanted to be a racecar, and the parents tried to forbid it, so he became a race car anyway? He ended up getting run over by a train. He was okay though.
And the doctor who fixed him stuck a racecar engine under his hood behind the parent's backs.

No, his father told him he could pick whether he wanted to be a taxi or a hotrod. When the car came out, he looked like a taxi, but lifted up the hood to show the souped-up engine to the audience.
...which is kinda what you said, but you seemed to be saying it was the doctor's idea.

Terotrous wrote:I feel it's required to be the dissenting voice here. Yeah, Shrek 2 wasn't that great, but the original kicked ass. Shrek is probably better than anything Pixar has ever done, but not by very much, and Pixar has far more quality movies to their credit, so they still win overall.
I disagree. UMO, Shrek was no big deal either. Entertaining at best but nothing more.

The only thing that is above Pixar's standards is quality of animation, that's all.
Besides, I reckognized a whole lot of concepts from it as already done in plenty. For instance, in series 10th kingdom.
With all this Pixar/Dreamworks discussion, there's something that I miss more, and is the fact that Disney isn't planning to put out 2D animations anymore. Some of them were crappy, but the sheer awesomeness of Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear will make me miss them all...

And not even that. The main characters had a lot of attention paid to them but take a close look at Robin Hood and his Merry Men. They look bad and animate stiffly.

Yeah, seems like they were on the way out of crises.
They woulda solve lots of their problems if they just went back to the old tempo of one film every four or five years.
On the other hand, I'm kinda gloating there, because if they're canceling 2D department, that probably means that their animated movies didn't sell very well, which confirms just what I think of those movies.

What?! But 2D animation still ooks fantastic!
Dammit, I was worried this would happen.. 3D is nice and all, but it's being used unnecessarily now. Take that Polar express film, that did NOT need to be animated. It looks dumb. Apparently they needed it for one scene, or something, but it could've surely been done with cgi instead of filming the whole thing through with actors and then replacing them with 3D animation.. it just seems to me like its a brand new popular thing that the companies now feel like they have to use. things like Lilo and Stitch just wouldn't work in 3D, it'd feel like an entirely different film.. Gah, I'm pissed off now.
