OK, I'm back in town (finally) and un-jetlagged and quite possibly creative. I'll be doing a comic, but I'm not sure the pages yet. Up soonish.

I've been so flaky - being all gung-ho about participating in the 'cover-contest' bit, and not coming up with more than a couple sketchy sketches. Yay! :x

So, since there's a limited amount of room in this publication (and you all want to get it out quickly) should some of us "newbies" wait until next time? I mean, I have a page ready, but I'm both a new comic and one that has a really small target demographic. If this is a group effort I'm not sure about my fitting in. Any suggestions?

I just realized that I must've copied Faub's cover idea subconsiously while creating this one, so I'm going to make another if this isn't acceptable...

After weeks of writing, drawing, cutting and pasting and doing everything funny on paper, I decided, my comic would be done more justice in it's original usual style.

OK it's done. Three pages of comicy goodness. Some of the easiest writing I've done. I love it when characters just take over and do all the work. :)
I have the pages loaded in the ginormous 3000x4500 size requested in the guidelines.
They can be seen here:
http://onebrapt.keenspace.com/sampler.html
WARNING: really really big!!!! Mostly there for future downloading/transfer as needed.

Here's the small versions. They're in grayscale, but the real ones are 3-color (Fireworks version of half-tone).

Page is done, minus the Photoshopping, because I have to put my name and comic info in, but no Photoshop yet to do it in... Anyways, check it out, because it's my new first cover page. http://eternaldestinies.keenspace.com And any criticism is greatly appreciated (besides the fact that I still need to put in the Chapter name and the what not).

Colors:
That's exceptionally gray, dude. Have you tried saving it as 2-color B&W to see how it would look photocopied? If the copier can't do more than 16 colors the drawing starts looking really bad. Posterized to 2 colors, all you see are the darkest outlines around the figures. At 3 colors you get the outlines and backgrounds. Up to about 8 colors, you get a mass of gray that looks like you randomly took the burn tool to it. Between 12 and 14 colors it starts to look like pencil. At more than 16 colors it starts to look like the original drawing.

When I got my submission printed off as a flyer on a reasonably high quality photocopier and I can't count more than 4 colors. Most of my pencil lines are gone. The dark lines turned black and only the ink lines really showed.

Print out your submission with a 5 year old inkjet printer. If it looks bad, seriously, redraw the thing and take into account the fact that this WILL be printed. It's meant to be printed. If you draw for the web and expect it to look the same way when you print it, you're very mistaken.

Content:
A pinup of your main character really doesn't say anything about your comic. The pinup doesn't really show of your character's personality, what time frame (or planet) he's in, any other important characters involved, etc. You will need to seriously writeup your story if you want to get readers interested.

You need in the very LEAST, a title, a link, a good description of your comic and your copyright info so make this a submission. Seriously consider inking that thing because as it is, the way you have it scanned it'll turn to crap when it's printed. Seriously consider what your character does. What his personality is. Where he is. Who he is with. What makes your comic important enough for the reader to want to read it. What makes your comic special. Put that stuff in the submission.

So far, I think cortland has THE best submission of the bunch. He describes his comic, introduces the good guys AND the bad guys and even gives you a hint at the writing style. I would use that as a gauge to decided if your submission is good or not. If you're going for attracting readers with your artwork, you need to compare your submission with hartchamber's but that will be your competition.

I know this will sound mean but seriously, do it again. What you have simply won't work.

Thanks for the feedback Faub, and I'll use most of it (even though I did state that I still have to Photoshop, and add in the words to my submission) and am going to draw some comics between tonight and saturday, and hopefully will have it scanned and shopped by saturday night. Oh, and does anyone know where I can get some pictures of short ugly stereotypical goblins for referrance material?

Well, I'm done.
I'll upload the full size images later, my bro's playing FFXI and he gets a bit pissy when I use all the upload bandwidth :P.

Wow, I really probably should have read this earlier... but the ammount of posts were always so intimidating... Basically while reading the biggest issue I see you all having is what should be in the strip (well other than what should the cover and logo and all those little things)

My personal opinion is this... Since so many people are talking about an interview, it should probably start off the book but only at most half the page... it could be shared with a table of contents...

Next of course would be the strips... my thoughts on it would be that there are probably a few more gag strips then pure story strips... Gag strips really only need one page (If that) to shoot a funny joke out there... I might even suggest talking with other gag strips to take half a page and share a page increasing the odds of getting in the first issue. Now those pure story strips would have a harder time with this... So I'd suggest giving them a limit of 4-6 pages while only letting so many of these kinds of strips be shown... That way the best strips will get on and make the book look better. Competition is always good for quality. 2 pages for a gag/story strip isn't a bad idea as long as they make good use of their space like War and Cortland did... Those strips are awesome and definately sold me...
I'd personally try my hardest not to fill this thing with ad pages... They just wouldn't interest me and personally I would just skip over them. Why look at an ad when you have something funny right next to it?

These are all my personal opinions... *shrugs*

About the cover art, faub, I would suggest fading the comics in the background alittle to make the character REALLY stand out ^^
If I were to make the cover, I would ask all the people having a page to draw a picture of their main character at a certain scale of how tall they imagine their main character like... so many ft = so many pixels tall... Then put them all together...

If I can find time this weekend I am going to try my best to get a high quality page ready... I'll try to make it just one page... but I might do two if I can't fit something good that really shows me off...

I was really hoping Soap Committee, RPin or Space Coyote would submit something to blow that away. Soap won't even update her comic. Space Coyote has misgivings about doing it and I haven't really heard from RPin lately. I think he's avoiding me (I'm not THAT evil! 8))

Submit as many pages as you need to (within reason). We'll have a voting session later to determine who gets in and in what order. (I SO need to redo my submission....)
