Can .ico's have transparancies? I kept trying, but then gave up.
It can be done, I've seen it before.
Have you tried using GIF?

I've had a transparent icon for my site for a long time. I don't remember exactly how I did it, but I think it involved downloading a transparent icon from another comic and pasting in my own image.

Im the author of the favicon tool that you mention in this thread - ive seen the hits from here on my web logs.
The transparent background can be done - i have seen it with lots of favicons, but i am not an art-package expert - i think you have to set transparency to a particular value (not color) and then its ok.
Sorry i cant help any more with this. I hope that you have all enjoyed using the tools on my site.

Yeah, I was exporting it as a gif with a transparant background. The background came out black.
Must be something about literal palete order, or something else I don't know. I'll just deal for now.
Which software do you use, Ekshin? Either way, make sure you are choosing the 256 colors Windows Palette (sp?). I made one with transparent background myself too, but I didn't like it, so I went with the dark gray. It fits my comic anyway.

I'm using photoshop 5.02. Exporting to a 256 color windows pallete. Can you e-mail me an example or yours with a transparant background? If I can see the color value, I can mimic it.
Are you exporting gif? I can't remember if gifs use the alpha channel. It might be that. But if I can see one, I can re-create it.
