Late starter here. At least with traditional media anywho.
Started learning 3D Studio Max 2 when I was 11 or 12 (1996-7), started Photoshop when I was 14 (1999), began taking the programs seriously in 1999.
I seriously thought about drawing when my comic began in 2001, aged 16, I started it purely to improve drawing skills which were very much lacking at the time. That's probably the point I measure from in terms of drawing, 16, 2001, before that I sucked so bad it's really not worth mentioning. Kinda' stopped everything this year to get through college though, which is a pity but oh well, can't do the things you love all the time. *thinks about exams this week* *downs last dregs of ale* *strums banjo*

My earliest memory of drawing involves me getting hold of a pen and writing on my crib mattress with it. Sailboats, I think.
I was most likely 2 or 3 at the time.

I figured someone would jump on me for that one....Digital War wrote:Blimey, was that before or after they invented fire?

As a kid, I drew a lot. Mostly it was just Star Trek, Star Wars, and Doctor Who machines (why yes, I am a sci-fi geek, how'd you guess?) But when I was in high school, I went through short a period where I drew a lot.
And when I say "A lot", I mean "A lot of women". Probably because of the total absence of them in my high school life.
My early pictures of Shaedar look pretty much the same as my drawing then - it was kinda like it just hybernated. Then I got into writing.
However, after I started my comic and was talking to my mom about it, I remembered that when I was in first or second grade, my best friend and I had come up with a TON of comic designs - most based on videogames and James Bond, as I remember.
Got into comics at 11 or 12 when my brother got a full time job and I was able to read through his comic collection, which is why I'm a serious X-Men fan. Got SERIOUSLY into comics when I was 18 and got a job at a bookstore, and met Neil Gaiman's characters. Oddly enough, I was seldom able to afford rent.

Started drawing when I was a youngin' at five. Around the age of seven or eight I started drawing what I was seeing in all my comics, cartoons, and video games. Lots of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spider-Man, X-Men, Street Fighter 2 characters, etc...
I did a few comics in junior high and high school, mostly one panel jokes. There was one full page comic that I did in junior high about a hall monitor who was a superhero. It was meant to be amusing. Actually kinda worked too. Had a cool name, but I can't remember it right now.
Anyhow, I eventually evolved into drawing whatever came out of the lines I'd make. Instead of planning ahead with what I was going to draw, I'd just start drawing some lines and then see what kind of a picture would come out of it. There's a huge variety of images in my sketchbooks now, thanks to that.
So, went to college, just got a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting, and now I'm paying for it by not having a job! GO ART!!! 8)

I suppose I've been drawing since I was about 2. When I was 5 I drew comics about a character called "Super Duck". I also drew a lot of TMNTs around that time...when I was 7 I discovered Sonic the Hedgehog and copied the comics endlessly. I still credit those comics with helping me learn to draw cartoons. c_c I don't think it was until I was about 12 or 13 that I actually started coming up with my own characters.
In 1999 I came up with an idea for my first more-or-less original comic, but I only drew two pages of it before realizing that I wasn't a good enough artist to do what I wanted with it. In 2002 (ages 16-17), I redid the comic, re-titled it "New Edge", and actually finished an entire issue of it. (I later packaged this with several of the crappy music reviews on my site, turning it into a DIY mini-comic/zine, and sold several copies for $1.50 Canadian). Alas, I hadn't really planned out the rest of the story beyond that, and I kinda wrote myself into a corner. I was never much of a writer.
And now I'm here...These Days started on January 1st, 2004.

I still haven't learned how to draw.
And I'm ok with that.
Actually, I started reading webcomics late 2000 (I believe Riboflavin, Megatokyo, and Avalon were my regulars). Then I started wanting to be a part, so I began drawing for the first time by sketching the Avalon characters (and sending some sketches in as fan art) around June 2001. I got a Keen account and started my comic in September 2001.

I think I was eight when I started drawing; I did my first comic when I was 13 with a friend, I've been drawing and writing ever since. I guess I watched one too many bad cartoons about hugs and sunshine and decided that I could do far better. So let this be a lesson to anyone with kids, watch 'em like a hawk when they're in front of the tely or they may become web-cartoonist.

I started drawing airplanes at the age of four (god I was a perfectionist with those dang things). At about the age of seven I started drawing Nintendo video game characters with my friend, creator of Orange Penguins.
I started drawing actual comics at the age of ten. The characters were mainly screwed up Kirby/snowman-eschew characters. At age twelve I actually started drawing people. By the age of eighteen (present day) I can draw anime-style people, actual people (if I really wanted to try), and anime-style robots...and I can't draw planes or cars very well anymore...Probably because I didn't draw very much for the past two years.

I started comicking in 2nd grade, I started "Waterguy" in the 4th grade (which would be in 1996 I guess, I actually have the first "Waterguy" comic ever) and started it online In June 2002 when I was 15. My first comic ever was called "The Toilet Zone". It was all Twilight zone themed episodes, although it rarely featured toilets. I'll see if I can find any of them, they might be in my basement somewhere...
