Current music trends. Comments?

I don't like Linkin Park because too many of their songs use identical riffs or sound too much like each other.

I think the few purely-insturmental music they've done has been vastly better than all their other material with lyrics (some of their insturmental-only music actually sounds pretty cutting-edge, in fact), and I think if they did an album that was ONLY insturmental like that, it might be much better than what they usually do. But it would be much less popular.

The first time I heard their latest single on the radio (I didn't bother to learn the title, or how it goes, really), I heard the intro and was like, "Wow, this is kinda neat. Maybe I LIKE Linkin Park." And then cool instrumental techno funk ended and stupid crunchy numetal riffs took over, and after five seconds of gape-mouthed disappointment, I turned on NPR.









I find Cake offensive.

Nu Metal: Linkin Park has the potential to be a really good band, but their albums seem to be two good songs + 10 fillers. I thought Sevendust was good, but they appear to have vanished.

Pop Punk: Green Day and Offspring started it, Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are killing it. Blink 182 is decent, I used to like them a lot more when I was in high school. There's a band called Yellow Card that is also ok, but maybe that's just because I like the fact that they have a fiddle player.

Garage Rock: White Stripes are good. Haven't heard enough Hives, Vines, and Strokes songs to go either way on them. That Jet song is cool.

???: The Darkness are freakin' awesome. People either love this band or hate them. If you don't attempt to take them seriously, they're a lot of fun.

All time favorites: Van Halen, Rocket From the Crypt, The Refreshments, Unwritten Law, Jewel, and Soundgarden. And Fat Boy Slim.

I still like Blink and Boxcar Racer, but only cause they were at least originally angsty, and make an attempt to hide it with metaphors instead of just whining out loud singing "lifes not fair!". God damn. I like The Darkness, but I'm starting to hear it too much. They show that girl next door preview all the time, and nothing kills a song like being attached to a sappy teen movie. The only song I can remember from those is "Kiss Me," and thats just cause I already had the cd before it before the movie came out.

I think the next music trend will probably be retro rock, or something like that. Or maybe Barenaked Ladies will make a comeback. I liked them.

I'm betting that pretty soon we're gonna see the inevitable return of prog. It's already starting to happen with critically acclaimed bands like Sigur Ros and the Decemberists. In the next couple years, I think we may see a new prog band hit it big.

I don't either hate or like Darkness. They have a few nice songs, a good volac, their kitchy appearacne is cute, but I cannot pass by their lyrics.

I heard a live set over the radio and it sounded pretty bad... sound wise anyway <radio station always plays live concerts> ...but then I talked to some people who were at that very concert and they said it was the best gig they've ever been to. *shrug*
I think its all to do with their overwhelming stage presence!

There's still some okay pop punk out there. I don't listen to much post-punk (for lack of a better term) these days other than Melodic hardcore bands, and some Poli-indie stuff. so I'm not sure if I count. I'm not even quite sure what qualifies as pop punk. I assumed it was bubble-gum punk from the 90's. but then there's the whole.. genre dechord and the fights insue. Emo is really close to popular indie these days, with bands like the Get Up kids, Delinger's escape plan, hot water music, Grade, Atreyu, Boy sets fire, The promise Ring, etc. actually speaking of Boy Sets Fire, they are featured on the new hannover album.

But I don't know much about trends other than in europe Synthpop (synthie-musik) is really popular with bands like Wolfsheim and Apoptygma Bezerk getting a lot of popularity the last two years or so. but I'm dumb when it comes to radio rock.

Thats not to say I don't listen to bands like Radio head, R.E.M, Morressy, Soundgarden, gang starr, Wu-Tang, and what not. I just don't get that stuff from the radio. I usually just listen to the radio, in general. Like Duff I listen to NPR, specially the Jazz fridays. thats really a great time to tune the radio in.

and I have to make a shout out to Freezepop if you like a mix of upbeat happy, and very humerous songs like Robotron 2000 (which I think has to be diesel sweeties inspiration *l*) bicycle Thief, and even a gem and the hologram's cover. http://www.freezepop.com i believe.

The latest KMFDM album was pretty metal-based. I thought it was better than their last few albums were.

Then again, they have 20 years of experience and have hit just about every subgenre you could possibly connect to industrial rock in that time. Most of these nu metal bands that just came around have... what, 5?

this has in fact already happened over here, i don't think one could describe Muse's second and third albums as anything but prog, and they're getting some pretty huge success.

The most positive surprise for me, concert-wise is Chumba Wamba.
For a group with reputation of one-hit-wonder whose one his is pretty old anyway, they were great. They have a kind of songs that get into your ears after halfa minute and you can fully injoy them although you never heard them before. And it's pretty intellegent music.

The reason it seemed like people either loved or hated the darkness was because when they first came out, I looked at some CD review websites, and everyone either gave them Five Stars or Zero stars.

As for pop punk, it's mainly just a generalization. Music Genre's are never very solid anyway.

Yeah, heir politics is pretty extreme. But I kinda like it. On stage, they said:
"This one is to everyone who never bought our original release! We believe musicians shouldn't be ultra-rich superstars."

Don't bother. Most of the album has these ridiculous ballads that don't suit the band at all. A friend complained to me a couple year ago about how band's singles sound nothing like the rest of the CD and completely throw their audience off. That's pretty much what Jet did. They have about four songs (if that) like their single, and that's it. The rest is just pathetic.

Someone mentioned Evanecence (how do you spell that stupid name anyway?!?!), and I gotta say THEY'RE the most overrated thing in this world today. Please, everybody thinks they're the next great rock band, when their songs could easily be turned into elevator jingles and no one would notice. Anyone who was a fan of boy bands from the late nineties owns this album. That's telling enough of the quality of this "band." Give me Linkin Park over them anyday.

And although I find Linkin Park's new songs disappointing, I still like their first album, and I really respect their work ethic. Apparently they don't party all the time, and focus on making good concerts for the fans. Good for them.

My CD player in my car broke on me, and I had to suffer with radio. Driving was suddenly a nightmare for me, whether it was a two minute drive, or a three hour trip. I was thankful when my car got totalled in an accident, cuz it meant I could get a new car with a cd player and I could escape the black, lifeless vacuum that is radio.

Nowadays, I look anywhere I can for music. MTV2 has actually pointed me in some directions for really good bands. Looking into what's across the pond in Britain right now, and I like what I'm seeing. Also, there's a handy little site called CDbaby.com that features only independent artists for good prices of all genres. That place is a goldmine, I tell ya. I've emptied many a wallet for them.

The music's out there, it's just not right in front of us. I know my time has past with mainstream because I can't tell the difference between most new bands now. I never thought that would happen, but it has. Guess that makes me past my time now.

As much as I'd love to hate things on princepal, the truth of the matter is if I listen to practically anything more than a few times I'll start to like it.

I try to keep away from things like Britney Spears in order to maintain my sanity.
