Sketching

Post by MechaByrd »

Just curious as to what kind of notebook everyone is carrying around with them. What would you say is the ideal sketchbook to have with you at all times?

I haven't found a portable sketchbook I liked. I really like composition notebooks, as far as the way they are bound [sturdy yet flexible] and the size [about 18X26cm / 7X10in]. I like that they are put together with a string. You don't have a spine to wrestle with. And I absolutely hate anything spiral-bound. The only thing is that they are lined. Moleskine books would be perfect for this, if they only came in the rght size. Does such a thing exist? I've been searching for sewn/stitched/thread-bound sketchbooks/journals all over

My sketchbook is a Strathmore, hard bound sketchbook, pretty much like a regular book only the pages are blank. This does have a spine so it's probably not what you're looking for. For christmas I got a pair of spiral bound sketchbooks so I guess that's what I'll be using for the next couple years.

Could you take one of these spiral bound books and make the string binding yourself? Or maybe get regular paper, fold it in half and stitch that with a cardstock cover?

I found the greatest drawing book ever! Ok, my girlfriend found it but either way it's awsome! It's a spiral note book with real think paper. I forgot what kind it was but it is awsome. but I like it so much I only draw in it when I draw something REALLY good. as for sketching goes I'll draw on just about anything but that thin crap that smeers the lead real bad.

I have an 8in/14in wirebound. I go through them quickly. so they change all the time. I always keep a sketchbook in my backpack. Its like that and skateboard (or an accoustic guitar) makes for a great day out of fun.

Haha, I remember the one time I forgot my sketches--I actually considered cutting class to get them.

My ideal sketchbook...actually, it isn't a sketchbook at all. It's a large picture, hardcover book (currently a book on sailboats, though I'll probably replace it with a book on human anatomy) a cardboard folder, like you would take to school and about twenty or so sheets of paper. Some of the drawings I do are good enough to be scanned in and colorized, and I don't want to deal with torn edges or torn pictures.

Plus, when I get tired of drawing, I can just open the book.

(I also have a hardcover sketchbook that can double as my drawing surface, but I rarely use it because I still want to have loose pictures.)

Sketchbook

I carry a small winsor and newton double-wire visual diary around with me everywhere which I do rough pencil sketchs to plan panels for my comic.

Then I carry a large winsor and newton double-wire visual diary around to do pictures which I'm actually going to scan and use.

Plus a folder full of A4 sheets of paper.

Oh and about three art reference books.

My bag weighs a ton.
