THIS is your problem. "Real events, spiced up a bit." This is only a good thing if the things you and your friends do are interesting to other people. Things that are funny to your clique of friends (especially via inside jokes), will translate as completely boring or dumb to everyone else on Earth. If you exaggerate dumb and boring things, they're just a lot more dumb or boring.lord_blackfang wrote:#3) Not funny. Hm. This is the biggest blow to me. First, I'll go beat up Ugo, he comes up with most of the jokes. I'll think of something more constructive later. I certainly won't steal other's jokes, as most of the strip is based on real events, just spiced up a bit.
So basically, you need to work on jokes that are more universally funny, or if you must have self-referential humour, make sure your characters and situations are well established before you jump into it. (Having your characters come out and say "Hi! My name's Blippity Bloo Blah, and I'm cuh-razy!" does NOT equate with being well established).
Also realize that being funny conversationally while talking to people in real life does not mean you'll be a funny writer, they're completely different animals.
