What size do we draw at?

What size do we draw our comics at?

I draw on 8.5 x 11" paper, with long dimension roughly 11". This is so it fits in the scanner easily, and is also large enough for clarity.

I do 3, 3.5 inch by 3.5 inch squares but I last month I started drawing the strip with 4-inch by 4-inch squares. It gives me more room for larger text.

I use a 5" x 14" piece of bristol board (I get it in books that are 17 x 14, and chop it up and leave the extra 2 inches to try to make a heading for my comic). Each panel is 4 inches high and 3 inches across, with a .25 inch buffer zone between the panels.

For the lettering, I make about 5 pencil lines at the top and bottom of each panel, spaced 3/16 inches apart. Then I use them as necessary.

Along time ago I ripped my dimensions off of a Zits comic, and then multiplied it as far as the paper width could go. Then I reduced it because it didnt fit in my scanner, so my cartoons go about twice the size that they're finished in. Of course, I draw all my cartoons in the same notebooks, and all I do is trace over the last background to start a new comic. This works.... but.... eventually you begin to stretch it little by little until its almost reached the whole width of the page.

i do my pages 8.5x11, that's the largest scaner i have easy access to. sometimes i break it up so i can work bigger, whick makes it look much neater when it is shrunk down.

ah yes, the shifting size thing, i used a template page to stop that problem.

For those of you who draw on comp printer paper, this is even better because you can print out blank boxes then.

Yeah, I wish I could print out boxes onto bristol board... I spend way too much time making sure the boxes are aligned and straight.

I use 8.5x11. Got plenty of it, and that works.

I work on regular A4 paper (210 x 297 mm / 8.27*11.69 inches) , I have a template with 6 squares, and a bit of margins on each side.
but I don't print the template on the page I'm drawing on- I have one printed, and then I attach the two pages with a sticky tape, so I can see the template through the paper.
after scanning I cut each frame separately, and paste it into another template.

I draw Fiddly Bits on a 14"x17" sheet of bristol board. I get my margins by laying a straight edge along the four edges of the paper.( this gives me a little more than an inch of margin on all sides.) I then scan the finished comic in four parts and piece it together with Adobe.
I scan all images at 600 dpi. Then I reduce the size in Adobe to something I can better manage while I do any finishing work I may need to do.

I do the panelling and lettering in Microsoft Word, which gives me nine 3x3 inch panels to work in, I print it, draw in the art, and then scan it. It's pretty consistent
