How I discovered Lacunae

Post by Columbellidae »

Silver;
Would you like to know how I found out about Lacunae? It was actually a coincidence involving an acronym and a search engine. I had typed in 'CCD' but what I meant by this was charge-coupled device, not changeling control division. A charge-coupled device is "electronic film", a light sensitive chip that is probably most well known as the main component of digital cameras. Several of the sites struck home, but I lost all interest in them when I found Lacunae. Even though it was unintentional, I'm glad I found the comic, because I absolutely love it. I've already voted in the top 99.

Best,
James

Thankyou James. It's really nice to hear this sort of story, and I appreciate you taking the time to tell me :D

I know quite a few people stumble onto Lacunae through Jack or through a search for 'Lacunae' in books on various engines, but I always like to hear how people do find this comic.

I stumbled upon "Lacunae" just this Wednesday. Having recently found "Jack" I've started keeping an eye out for the "guest stars", and I recognised Silverblue in the banner for the strip in the Keenspace 99 list. So I had a look, and was caught by the wonderful, eerie pictures. You've got a new fan. :D

I didn't find the comic; I was told of it. Being one of those who believes that Silverblue deserves fame (or at least enough renown to live on), and someone who enjoys stories of nearly any sort (as long as it's readable), I went to view the first strip, and haven't stopped since.

But where is the rest of 'Thomas Becoming'.

Slow, evil smile.

Ah, enough renown to live on. Now that would be something...

Thomas Becoming is on hold, being rewritten in the back of my head. I decided that some of it needed more realism, or at least a closer correlation to Lacunae's atmosphere.

Also, it's waiting on stuff that I haven't got, for at least the next three to five episodes: Details of culture, terrain, creatures, organizations, weather, and so on.

I'm in the middle of the US, and haven't even visited the country I've set this in; not to mention personal issues that I don't want showing through in the characters unless they belong there. I can only bullshit for so long before someone reading it says "that's not right", and doesn't mean something that's deliberately written to seem not-right.

Yes, and it moves slowly, I'm afraid. The next Arc is another brief Nevertel one, the one after that is about Phages and pack-membership, and the one after that is about the Warren and CCD agents Sean and Amaranth.

I am considering throwing some more formalised information up, particularly as regards terrain and weather, which are markedly different given the change in climate caused by an earlier Industrial Revolution. Lacunae is a hot, wet Australia. But I need to grab some more maps from some official sources here and do some calculations based on ocean level, flood plains, and so on.

...

I must be insane.

I don't remember how I found it :/

Post by Stonecoldsober »

It was a link off another comic I was reading (I usually browse link pages when I'm bored) and thought I sent the link home, but never did find it again....for about 5 months. Then I ran across it again, I think this time in the Belfry list? and finally clung tenaciously to the link long enough to mark it into my comic page online. (No, I don't run a comic, I just have a tabled list of comics I read.)

I originally found it the same time I found the Umbra one. Can't remember title/URL of that one either. :/

One of those years, I suppose.

How I found Lacunae / What I'd like to see in future stories

Post by Dakini »

I first found Lacunae by clicking through on it from Keenspace. It had an interesting graphic, and once I was on the site I saw it was done by Silverblue. I'd heard nice things about you from Loki on FurryMuck, and wandered through the maze (or something similar) you'd built there, with enjoyment -- so I stuck around to read the web strip. I like it.

As far as what I'd be interested in seeing in future stories, I find myself extremely curious about Anaphora. Looking up the word in the dictionary, I find it means "using a pronoun or other pro-word instead of repeating a word; repetition of a word or phrase as the beginning of successive clauses." It seems oddly appropriate to have a repeating, 'short-hand' filler (of sorts) for a web strip whose title signifies "a blank space or a missing part; a discontinuity in an anatomical structure."

So will Anaphora be a repeating character, then? His poetry, mixed in with the art, is lovely. The wispy tentacles would seem to indicate he is being consumed by the Commeddia version of the virus -- yet if that's the case, how is it he can communicate amicably with, and control them?

I'm also curious about Asagwe and Shadow. What is he? Is he actually fading away like a ghost in that last panel? What (and maybe who) is his lady? How do they manage to keep things so calm in their hotel, in what has been referred to as a bad section of town? How is it they apparently have one of the secretive and isolationist Wired loyally serving them? For that matter, who or what are the Machine Children?

Those are the questions I currently find myself wondering about, that I'd like to see explained in future stories. Thanks for your time and for sharing your stories.

Yes, I remember Loki rather fondly...wonder what happened to them?

Anaphora will be back - although I only wish I had written the poetry! He, like his words, is the property of a gentleman called Tim Hamilton, a Melbourne poet. You can find more of Tim (or Anaphora)'s poetry at his website at http://arcana.danann.net or at his Deviantart gallery at http://drzero.deviantart.com.

As for communication and consumation...well...time will tell.

More will be seen about the people in Hotel Nevartel quite soon now - the next Arc will have hints about both Asagwe and Shadow. And miniature golf. Very important, miniature golf...

As far as Isadore goes, she's for another day, but the next Arc does have something about the Machine Children and the Werebreed both.

Its almost finished (the writing of it), so we should resume regular updates very soon now. They may be somewhat sporadic until the new year, as I'm rather badly overworked, but I promise they will be there.
