Upgrade problems? Echos of 2001 A.S.O. or what?

So, has the new Lindy pulled a H.A.L. on us, or is the problem closer to home? Scoobi seems pretty happy to point the blame on Jack, but is he stupid enough to sabotage the mission over jealousy?

I think he wants to sabotage it and then put the blame on Jack, but you never can tell.

I too think this crisis reeks of sabotage.

But whether or not Scobee actually sabotaged the mission, he'll probably see this as a chance to give Jack a bad rep, seeing as he humiliated himself because of Jack, and Jack's dating his ex-fiancee.

(it is Scobee, not Scoobi, right?)

Sabotage or not, the real question is if Jenny will be able to stand up to Scobee. She is part of the team, so, will she be able to ask him, "What was the error code?"

Her actions, or inactions, at this time could make or break Jack's reputation.

Back at Motorola, I got stuck in a lot of technical crisis meetings.

Usually there were the managers looking for someone to yell at,
while the engineers are trying to figure out how to solve the problem.
But the engineers were stuck in a meeting where they couldn't get at
the information that the mangers were demanding, so we were
frantically typing into our 2 way pagers to get what little info we could.

It was much more interesting when upper management got involved.
They were far more inclined to do a *brief* strategy meeting, assigning
general actions to a lot of folks, asking different folks to investigate
different angles. Then they'd turn us loose on the problem. Middle
managers seemed more inclined to drag things out and make us sit
there. (Perhaps this is why they were middle managers instead of
upper managers?)

Anyway, at the moment, Cecil, Beth, Barb and Jenny are all trying to
find out what's actually going on instead of just talking about trying
to find out what's going on. We'll join them tomorrow.

Nice to see people are thinking along these same lines. My only added comment would be that Scobee is amazingly cool for someone with a known hot temper in a crisis. Almost as if this whole scenario is playing out according to plan.

My question is, is this a government probe? If Lindbergh burns up, can Jack and Cecil be sent to prison for tampering with a government mission?

Or...AHA! What if...? OOOoooooh! Excuse me, folx, I have to shoot Scotto a private email. If I'm wrong I will look like the biggest phule in the known Universe for even thinking of it, and if I'm right I will ruin it by mentioning it here. I await future developments with bated breath.

But he's a colonel, isn't he? He probably didn't rise that high in the military hierarchy because he's a PROFESSIONAL flake. And he was a test-pilot, right? I don't think they're known for losing their cool when things heat up (to mix my metaphors).

But, yes, he's obviously looking to place blame somewhere, and if it humiliates both Jack and Jenny, then so much the better.

And, as for HAL references, I think we're all right as long as Lindy doesn't start singing "Daisy." Or doing the Lindy Hop?

There's a big difference between losing it personally,
and losing it professionally.

If Scobee couldn't keep his cool under fire,
he wouldn't be dangerous.

I get the impression that Scobee's somebody you don't cross because not only is he a whacko in his personal behavior, but he's frighteningly good in his professional behavior. He's just too good at his job for him to get disciplined for personal behavior.

Which makes him all the more dangerous; he's got carte blanche.

Actually, that's the ground based duplicate of Lindy they're inside,
rather than the actual one. Having a system on the ground allows
you to troubleshoot the systems if you're incommunicado. 8)

Ahh, I suspect Scott know how to handle the "I'm great, you suck, and I have the data to prove it" types of the world" quite handily now

I love the art work on this one - looks like Scott and Photoshop are having a good time together. He's taken some of the spiffy stuff he did for Tiffarella and is applying it to 21CF now and it looks great

One thing that was discussed at the Space Frontier Foundation
was a sort of Management Training Conference, and how different
personality types interact with each other at work.

The "I'm Great! (You suck) and I can prove it" type of person is
the guy you all know from work who thinks he's the best guy in the
company and everyone else stinks. They're the one who has to
tell other people how great they are, and do their best to make
anyone else feel inferior so that they can say "I'm great!"

All the while this lecture was going on, I was chuckling inside
my head (and externally as well) in part because I knew this
was exactly what I'd been writing about.
