So... today's lesson is, of course, remember to label your samples? :-)

Also, people should CLEAN UP AFTER THEMSELVES. I found one bottle that had "H. Sakurai" written on it, and I know she hasn't been here for 8 years. :) That's a bit unsettling.

Help me out. Sodium + oxygen = lots of energy released all at the same time?

Okay, all metals oxidize, that is, they react with water. Iron oxidizes to form rust, for example. Sodium oxidizes very rapidly in water, producing NaOH (sodium hydroxide, or lye) and hydrogen gas. The heat from the oxidation of sodium is enough to ignite the hydrogen, which burns rapidly, and can cause an explosion in enclosed containers. So, there you go. :)

I must be thinking of the dramatic way that Magnesium burns.

In return for the link, I present you with a slightly different version of the periodical table.

Heh... excellent link, DFG. That guy seems like a genius, really... able to write stories and/or anecdotes in all sorts of different styles...

My favorites thus far include Technetium, Silicon, and Chlorine. Technetium for the outrageously bad pun at the end. :-)

Here's another take on the table: http://www.uky.edu/Projects/Chemcomics/
This one was made by the Chem dept at U of K. Plus it has a lot of familiar comic faces. Nostalgia anyone!
