Since recently there have been all these big pop-up ads on many of my favorite Keenspot comics. I'm just wondering how long it will take until somebody comes out with a Keenspace Premium and all of us Keenspacers start finding huge ads on our pages. It seems most things drift from Keenspot to Keenspace eventually...

Running an ad banner on your site in exchange for free hosting service not to mention an automatic update system is very reasonable, but pop-up windows are just plain EVIL!

First of all, you have read this, haven't you?

There's some forum discussion linked from there as well as two excellent comments from Jeff Darlington and Jamie Robertson:

The last one's incorrect; try http://clanofthecats.com/private/update ... op-Ups.htm

I can't see 'KeenSpace Premium' being viable IMO; the good comics can be too hard to find amost the 2000+ sites out there, it'd be like getting all the cable channels to watch your one favourite show. And from what I can see the 'Space ad code, aren't we already covered under the 'Spot premium service?

As for the evil that is pop-ups (or worse yet, pop-unders) appearing on KeenSpace, I thinks it's a 'definite maybe'; it's probably not worth their while, but I'm not going to supprised if (when?) they do.
Even if it comes to that tho', we're still a heck of a lot better off than anyone on Tripod, Geocities, or Spaceports.

A lot of that depends on how much they charge. Would I pay $1 a month to look at the 7 or so Keen comics I read ad-free? Quite possibly. Would I pay more? Unlikely.

Another possibility is if they give the <b>artist</b> a chance to make their site ad-free for $<i>x</i> of <i>n</i> Gigs transfer. How much would I pay to make my sites ad-free? Since they already <b>are</b> ad-free on my mirror, not too much.

But I'm open to suggestions, and certainly want to help the Keen stay viable. Even with their issues, I enjoy it here.

I don't give a damn about the advertisement tag, I'd pay money if Keenspace would put me on a server that wouldn't crash three times a week. You hear that Keenspace? I'll pay you! Go ahead, make an offer!

I don't really mind the ads all that much, seriously. But if the pop-ups keep coming at every single page I read and at every minute then I'll start to get really annoyed and complain. For now, I still think it is at a relatively reasonable and safe rate.

Yes I had read those comments and I'm particularly in agreement with the first one. It's a shame that Keenspot must put pop-up ads on their pages to break even. There should be an alternative.

I'm not worried about my own pages. I'm starting to consider starting my next comic on my own webspace, but I hate to see all those ads when I'm browsing my favorite Keen sites.

KeenSpace premium is in the works (pay hosting), KeenSPOT premium already covers keenspace advertisements (but only works if javascript is ENABLED.)

I would just like to add that the current space server (with 5551 comics) is actually nearing it's threshold for efficiency. The average Webserver is designed only to host about 750 sites, tops, that's with 250<strike>GB</strike>MB of RAM. Keenspace has half a GB. Certain kernel hacks had to be made just to allow more than 256 sites.

Now given, about 60% of the comics are eithe idle or empty, with the remaining comics generating the majority of bandwidth.

And KeenSPOT by far outpaces Keenspace in bandwidth usage. 115GB/day(KeenSPOT) versus 65GB(KeenSpace) and that doesn't take into account the forums.

(ED: An apache server not running perl can serve about 750 simultaneous connections with 256MB of RAM. Keenspace IS running mod_perl, so that drops down to 120 or so if every site was running perl scripts. Currently only a few actually are.)

(ED: The performance problem is always critical between 11pm Pacific and 1am Pacific due to half of the keenspace sites updating at this time.)

That's seriously good news. Do we have any ballparks on how much KS Premium will cost, and what perks (beyond I assume faster and more reliable accessing) will come with it?

Faster, more reliable isn't enough?

Improved tech support is one, I forget what the other perks are...

(This is an exact quotation from Nate)

Soon, we'll be debuting Keenspace PREMIUM (for a small monthly fee) that will include the following features that we don't offer for keenspace:

-dedicated overpowered server
-MySQL access for users
-PHP scripting
-CGI by default
-Email accounts and Services

I am <i>so</i> there.

(Yes, faster and more reliable access was more than enough, but Negotiation 104 clearly states you open with more than you need, in case you might get it.)
