Yes....yes, there is...but I can't quite put my finger on it yet. I'm sure everyone else will figure it out just before I do due to that whole "time zone" thing, but there are extra complexities here perhaps.

Borzoi knows of these other beings that have been at the fringes of our story, does he not? I can't help but wonder where they fall in the prospectus.

Well, you needn't think that everyone will
figure it out before you... part of having an
intelligent readership is the possibility of
having someone guess what's going on in a
story, but it's still up to me to make it
work.

They are very, very important... and the story
will reveal why.

Avariss Industries is a conglomerate of
individual businesses that are the direct
descendants (adjusting themselves to changing
times) of their earlier counterparts, which
flourished in the era of their world when it
was legal to do just about anything to furries
that humans wanted. They derived, refined,
modified and manufactured nearly every product
they made from some species of furry lifeform.

Bev Brune was one of the last of those to be
victimized by one of their corporate laboratories
before the changes in their society, which
Avariss' forebearers (as well as many other
segments of human society) were reluctant to
comply with and therefore had to be forced to
obey the new laws.

I don't know if Avariss has thought it out fully or not, but the money isn't important. What it represents is. It is power over the world he circulates in. That is what he gets his big thrills from.
Granted, that's a primitive view for him to take, but we're talking early twenty-first century here. It's fairly common trait in such primitive times.

Except, after high school, the kids who were bully magnets in high school have a chance to rise above the bullies (corporate-ladder rising; not morally rising) and become even worse (colder, harder,etc.) than the bullies in school.
For example, Bob O'Link probably was not one of the bullies in school. He was probably one of those who got picked on a lot until he figured a way to make them lose interest in him (which might explain his "Crazy Bob" act).
