Gotta hand it to you, Gene...that last panel sent chills down my spine, and my eyes were open even wider than the very surprised tomcat's.

Um... the machines are revolting, now? That's aaaaaaaaaaall Furriston (and the rest of the world) needs. It's not enough that Mikey's plotting evilness and the shadow people are losing their protection...

Well, at least we know it's not a general revolt, and the machine won't be assmiliating anyone anytime soon.
Still, the little machine that goes "PING!" has a point, especially since the Shadows are actually Humans, if not offshoots. I'm not so sure about the "letting them die" part, but I wonder what is the true nature of the Shadows. Part of me thinks that the Shadows are, genetically, Humans that have not given up their instinctual sides.
Another part of me thinks a Dark Crystal happened in this world and the Humans divided into the Shadows and the Humans, like the Skeksis and the Mystics.

few devices that, through some combination of
being handled a lot by living beings and some
other factor as yet unknown, take on a sort
of psychotechnological awareness of being.
And even then, they don't all revolt - just
the one device designed to help locate the
shadow people decided it had had enough. It
and others of its kind only recently have
acquired this gift of conciousness, and they
don't take it for granted as many other beings
do. So having to participate in prolonging
the existance of other beings, regardless of
what the reasoning might be for doing so, was
unbearable to it.
It was exactly the kind of moral dillemma thatGotta hand it to you, Gene...that last panel sent chills down my spine, and my eyes were open even wider than the very surprised tomcat's.![]()
Gene (and CW as well) have found themselves
in as regards what they are involved in. At
what point can all the intrigues and tactics
and subterfuge no longer be written off as
the lesser of two evils? No matter how good
you think your reasons are for engaging in a
deception, it doesn't stop it from being a
deception. And it does become easy to forget
that living beings are in the balance, (and
not feeling very good about it...)
wait, who said there humans, i thought i saw one with a beak once, i think you may have misinterperated the comic from
one of there kind (as in one of the humans)

confess a measure of cinema influence.
my old job I worked on all manner of computer
devices, and there were occasionally a few
that simply would not behave. They defied all
logical processes and their erratic behavior
could neither be resolved, repaired or even
explained. They really did seem to have their
own type of personality, and the manufacturer
sure wasn't responsible for it...

revelation right now in the story.
i know what you mean about machines with personality, Gene. i had a portable CD player that completely refused to play certain songs, it would stop running as soon as it came to that song and in shuffle mode it would completely ignore it. And it also had a tendency to play music to itself without me ever touching it, then if i went over and looked at it, it would stop dead and wait for me to go away again. It had hundreds of little personality traits like that, and then one day, it up and disapeared. On 2002-04-03 17:35, genecatlow wrote:More or less on my own, though I have toOn 2002-04-02 17:58, Kaerou wrote:

How did that device know that SotS by its very nature does not allow transmission of falsehood and deception? O_O
communication it is. It "comes with the job"
so to speak. Being able to talk, write, etc.
are all useful means of communication, but
everyone who's ever lied has known what the
truth was in their own mind, all the while
they were speaking or writing the lie. But to
make direct contact with the mind of another
being makes it clear by the very nature of
the contact itself that one cannot "say one
thing and mean another". The device might be
able to send false information via the tests
I was running on it to determine why it wasn't
working, but in SotS it could no more lie to
me than I to it.

any variety is especially prone to eccentric
behaviour! I had a CD player that would only
play the first 50 tracks of a CD, no matter
how many might be actually on it. I have now
a portable CD player that will play non-
music CD's... yes, computer data CD's that
don't contain recorded music! It will find
Track 1 (that's the only track that a data
CD has) and send a cacaphony of noise into
the air, translating data into music. In fact
some data CD's are weirdly playable that way!
Science-fictiony sounds come out. <=)
