I didn't think I was into fantasy either (I can barely sit through LotR) but I got hooked after a few episodes of season one. More of a course in government and leadership than anything.

Have an interesting anecdote about the whole rape fiasco, or "SansaGate" as it's called. Got into a pretty heated flamewar with someone I've been friends with since high school and went to her wedding. She's of the mindset that it's the most horrible thing ever put on TV, I think it was a necessary moment for story and character development. Led to name calling and accusations of misogyny towards me, and me blocking her on Facebook. Have to admit a show has a lot of clout if it can destroy friendships. I think the whole SansaGate outrage is a bit stupid because it's been the most rapefull show on TV since the pilot, and the one everyone got so angry about was probably the only one necessary to the story, the big difference being it happened to character people like versus a random background wench, a guy, or a villainess no one really likes.

Spoiler (sort of) I don't want to be one of those book snobs, but that scene was so much worse in the book that I can't believe anyone would be shocked by it in the show. Granted it happen to a different character in the book, but it was still much more graphic and messed up.
