Are You Expecting Someone?
Suggestions? Meaning it's not finalized? Well, now I will add my two cents...
I've got two suggestions, and they can be easily combined for carry-on storage. First off, I'd like to see an American anime fan. One of those greasy little fanboys (like myself, natch) who actually knows who Miyazaki is and can do doctoral theses on comparing psychological aspects of 'Ghost in the Shell' and 'Perfect Blue'. Tim's shown anime leanings, but he also serves the purpose of the really greasy fanboy. Rumi, certainly, has experience in the field, but is more interested in manga (at least from what we see). Plus she's got the insider's perspective, the view that one can only have from being born into the culture of anime and growing up with it. I'd like to see someone who has discovered anime, someone who originally held the 'cartoons are for Saturday mornings' opinion until getting his hands on a fansub of 'Nausicaa'. Someone who's passionate about it, in short.
My other wish is to have a foil for Rumi. Well, maybe not 'foil'
I have to agree on the faculty adviser type. There is no representation of veteran fandom in the group (whereas at the club I've been to, it is almost all long timers).
How about say... a longtime sf fan who took up writing with fanzines, wound up publishing real books, but is not yet successful enought to write full-time. Teaches creative writing at the school and takes over as faculty adviser for the club. This would be the person who knew MZB back then, got to meet Campbell once, etc. Maybe throw in filking as well. Advantages: big fan connections, authority through age, familiarity with old technology, connection to school administration. Probably not a member of the action team, but could be a good support person.

Speaking of which (and working off Stig's idea a bit): a video nut. Film major, obsessive about camera angles, lighting, special effects, etc. Makes his own amateur work all the time. Constantly asking Will to act in his films, but is too much of a control-freak director to put up with.
---
Sort of a "Wizard of Speed and Tim" , perhaps?

Yeah! Every fangroup needs a bizarre filkist with an uncanny knowledge of classic rock.
---
If the filk I've heard is anything to go by, the filkist would take up an outcast position, like Tim's (He's a great guy, just don't let him start to sing). Cacofonix the bard springs to mind as a model.

The Staff Sponsor idea seems like a good one. The niche occupied by Giles in Buffy:TVS, possibly?
Muttley
