But, if the boss doesn't approve, tries to take it out on Rico, and Merry gets wind of it, the BOSS'S life could get very interesting as well. I've met a few girls like Merry. While they're usually shy around guys they're interested in, they're usually a lot more confident around family members - and less than tolerant of such interference. She's intelligent, sensitive, starting to get interested in vive-la-difference - and probably has a temper that, while it's slow to ignite, probably burns hotter than thermite once triggered. She may just be a match for Rico in more ways than one...
I have just one question.
Why were did we suddenly jump from the ladder incident to the "toy gun arms race?"
Anyway, to comment on the possibility of a Rico/Merry relationship. I think it's quite possible. But what really facinates me is this: How is the boss going to react to it? After all, he IS Merry's uncle and if he doesn't approve, Rico's career life could get VERY interesting indeed...

It's a sweet start, no doubt about it.
There's no way he'll believe she liked him for putting his foot in a mop bucket! At least for a while, anyway...
And now, Ralph has yet another set of plot complications to mix into this already richly-flavored stew!
I get the idea he's got a REAL long-running comic here...
Life is good.

[...unWARP!!!]
Good evening.
Forgot to mention something. His reaction in the last panel.
If that, um, thing wasn't in a word balloon, then one would assume he's just fuming/angry at himself.
Seeing that he's actually saying something (growling), then I think I have a pretty good idea what he said.
He said it in Spanish, and no, I'm not going to print it here, for Merry's sake, though I doubt she'd understand it.
Until next time, remember:
I AM THE J.A.M.
Good evening.
[WARP!!!]

You just have to wonder, though....
Are things going a little TOO well between Merry and Rico? I see the possibilities of this little "pairing" as a chance for some fireworks not only between Merry and Rico, but also Ben and Lily!
Example: In the movies at a time like this, one character turns to the other....
"Sam....it's quiet......."
"Yeah, Pete...too quiet....."
"Yeah, Pete...too quiet....."

Bad! Bad person! Go stand in the corner until we can think up some suitable punishments!
Of course, if they are following a movie-type script, the signs are fairly positive. I mean, let's examine the scripts that meet the given parameters...
(1) The Sidekick/Background Characters: examples, Barney & Betty Rubble, Norton & Trixie (?) from The Honeymooners. Prognosis: good. These characters never had the difficulties of the main characters.
(2) The Star-Crossed Lovers: example, Wesley & Buttercup (The Princess Bride). Fairness also compels me to mention Romeo & Juliet, but I don't think Ralph is planning on going that direction.
(3) The Squabblers: example, Han Solo & Princess Leia (among many, many others). Prognosis: extremely good. Nothing can keep this type of couple apart.
All in all, I think their chances are pretty good - possibly even better than Ben & Lily, and I doubt anything bad is going to happen on that front either.
{grin} Whoa, there, amigo! In this context, "fireworks" involves what is euphmistically called plot complications by pro writers...meaning a wide variety of possible storylines, almost all being entertaining to the interested voyeurs (that's you and me). I see the fireworks potential in the same way as a "real" fireworks display - lots of flashes, loud noises, and entertainment. In short, it's a good thing, and I think Ralph's setup is a work of ART. Just as in real life, Merry and Rico's situation could go in nearly ANY direction - including impinging on the tidy relationship that Ben and Lily have built - there are clues to that already in Lily's gentle bewilderment of Merry and Rico's getting together, right?
Personally, I like the pairing of Ben and Lily, since I have a somewhat similar one in RL...and I've experienced weirdness when friends have fallen in love and ... ummm ... impinged on our relationship in unexpected ways! I salute Ralph for the direction he's taken with the plot....and can see a miriad of directions he can take it!
Example: Merry's the boss's niece. Rico is the new guy on staff with a mark against him already (that's how he ended up with Ben's crew in the first place). Oh, yeah...and Rico and Merry are becoming an item? Being Rico's AND Merry's immediate supervisor, Ben is already tied into the situation, whether he realizes it yet. Yep, like I said before: lots of flashes, loud noises....and entertainment for us!
JT
------------------

Well, I was going to make a rather pointed remark about Ben perhaps being a leetel bit overprotective, but it occurs to me that this exchange might not be misplaced. At the least, it's going to force Rico to reassess his intentions - and his regard for his own health! Of course, God help Ben if Rico gets cold feet and Merry finds out why! Lily would side with Merry on this one, I fear...
I assume it's already been mentioned how scary Ben can look with that toothy grin...
Or in other words...
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
Hallan
