What would work that we don't have is a per post captcha, like blogger. Perhaps one that you only need to do for your first, I dunno, 100 posts or 1st year? Though that just provides more incentive to hack oldbies accounts, so maybe just leave it a blanket thing.

spam spam spam fucking spam

This forum is moribund enough as it is; I don't think we need to discourage newbies any more than we already are.

I restate my previous suggestion for making our GD mods into admins. At least then they'd be able to ip ban these fuckers.

Why would that work? If a spam bot can get past one captcha, I don't see how per-post captchas are gonna do anything other than just hamper normal traffic on an forum thats already haemorraging traffic.
Just saying, when was the last time something like this happened? This is just a big deal because its the drama of the moment, in a while all the spam will be gone and things will go back to normal, and we wouldn't want to be kicking ourselves for going all TSA and putting in a bunch of extra, annoying little rules in a knee jerk reaction.

Unlike the TSA, we can also remove rules when it's clear we've gone too far.

But I do like the idea of new and extra admins, or stronger mod powers.

I guess before, there were always admins to deal with it more efficiently than mods can. If there's a captcha now that was probably introduced because of the last spam attack.
As for mods being promoted to admins - would banning that much IPs be good? If spam is "outsourced", would that do any good?
One thing I'm worried about is how much traffic forum is taking from spammers, what with bypassing captcha and all, I wonder whether there's a chance we crash.

We should try to look at how other message boards handle this. We can't be the only one who's gone through it.

One thing I know that some boards do is limit the amount of posts new users can make. If we could limit people to only create one topic per day and make one post per hour for the first week, we'd drastically increase the amount of work they'd have to do to spam us without inconveniencing new members that much.

I also think we need more people who have the power to delete their topics and ban them.

I promise you with all the authority that I have that we may or may not take care of it by then, I dunno, maybe. You can hold on to that promise.
