On another note, I want to read Twilight in an attempt to understand wtf all the raving is about. But I don't want to pay for it and I am reluctant to be seen taking it out of the library... so I haven't yet.

I'd hate to pay for it as well. Unfortunately, when my girlfriend dragged me to go see Twilight 2, she didn't have any money, so instead of paying for it as promised, I ended up buying both our tickets... =(

I was one of maybe five guys in that audience.

I downloaded all four of the twilight books and read all of them. For free, obviously.

They are bland and unremarkable. I wasn't interested in any of the characters. One character was starting to be mildly interesting (kid that turns into a werewolf) but then the author was all "wait this guy is more interesting than mr. sparklypants" and turned him into an asshat, which was not only jarringly ooc but also removed any interest I had in it. It's grammatically correct, but still about at the level of a 14-year-old girl with a good editor.

I've only gotten a few pages into the first one as of this moment, but they sure beat Left Behind by a mile.

Vampires have always been popular. They just recently intersected with Popular Fiction and the media [again] to sunburst into what is the 'Twilight Phenomenon.' You could say it's the fangirl's version of Star Wars. But there is a preponderance of vampire literature out there now, and even a resurgence in vampires in comics. About eleven years ago, though, I used to play the Vampire: The Masquerade roleplaying game and Live Action Roleplaying Game, and was fully immersed in the Anne Rice Interview with the Vampire phenomenon. Angel, Buffy, Vampire Diaries, True Blood... they're everywhere, and it's safe to say they'll always be a part of popular fiction. And while my own Forsaken Stars stars a vampire, the space vampire Azzi, I'm confident he's different enough, and layered enough to be a worthy protagonist.

Ultimately it doesn't really matter what the genre is, what your setting is, if you don't have characters with depth and emotion, and a good story, it won't be able to take on a life of its own with your readers. But as long as you have those components, along with your own confidence in those components, and a love for what you do, then the rest--like Isaac Asimov said--is just window dressing.

However, I'd like to see more stories in which lycanthropy is a curse of any kind. Not in the angsty 'this sucks it's totally a curse' kind of way. In the 'you are cursed, you and everyone around you are screwed for magical reasons' kind of way.

Eh? Eh? Well this one doesn't actually get into the curse at all, but becoming a werewolf really sucks in these stories. On the other hand, it' actually is a curse, you have to do something bad and get cursed for it. Getting bitten won't do it.

on the gaming front: i'd give Elder scrolls: bloodmoon a look-see, its an expansion to Morrowind, so it's a fairly old-ish game, most PC's and laptops these days would run it no worries. it features werewolves in an non-emo light...

inversely, on the vampiric front, i found (even through bugs) Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines a hideous amount of fun... especially the Malkavians, it's so fun playing a genuinely cursed (i.e: stark raving bonkers) vampire, instead of an emo-twit with a fetish for blood.

other games may include the Legacy of Kain series, which has... four games (five if you count the relatively abysmal blood omen 2), Great narrative with those..but other than that, there are relatively few computer games with a vampire/werewolf element that can be stomached easily... hell, Werewolf games are just plain RARE.

my wife read the first Twilight book cause her mom loves the books, thus she borrowed it from her mother and no money was shelled out. We watched the first movie on video, it just ended up being medicore, not bad enough to make fun of constantly, just kinda boring and pointless, which sorta sums up the books.

I always liked the movie "Wolf" with Jack Nicholson, James Spader and Michelle Phifer. But that could just be me. Also "Cursed" with Christina Ricci is just plain bad, but in a hilarious way, you know if you want to see a werewolf give someone the finger. Oh, "Dog Soldiers" was an excellent werewolf movie, and possibly the only Scifi Channel Original Movie that didn't suck. For further hilariousness you can also see "american werewolf in paris"

Well, I don't really mean to rant or derail the topic. I'm pretty sick of this whole twilight thing. Though at least I don't have to put up with it on a day to day basis. It's not that I'm particularly uber-PC or against swearing...but ...well, just as I wouldn't just stand by and listen to someone use racial or religious slurs, neither would I just let a homophobic slur pass by without comment. It's really not okay.

I apalogize, I didn't mean to use it as a homophobic slur. I'm pro-homosexuality if it helps. My art teacher is homosexual and she got married which I thought was pretty cool, and I have other homosexual friends.

Anyways, I'm just worried about what's happening today to the vampire reputation.

My roommate's mother (who until recently I thought a sensible woman) loves the books, and somehow convinced him to read her copy. The first book has been contaminating my apartment for around a month, with no progress aside from 3 chapters. He has confirmed much of the "bland fan-girl crap" speak that is scattered in this topic. I told him he needs to find a haz-mat container or return it, but no luck with him remembering to do either at an opportunity to do so. I know its ridiculous but I've yet to let the thing contact my skin or my belongings. In-fact I used my Cowboys scarf to move the wretched thing from my couch, and washed it immediately.
