Any of the Tenchi Muyo! series has their share of angst in them. How about the episode in 'Tenchi in Tokyo' which Sakuya is taken back by Yugi?

And what about Outlaw Star? There's a lot about Gene Starwind's past, as well as Suzuka. And of course Melfina's worries about her origins.

And in Nightwalker, there's Shido's worries about his forgotten past. And Vampire Princess Miyu (the OVA, at least), about Miyu's earlier worries about becoming a vampire. I suppose if you can name any anime, there is at least ONE instance of some dark part of some character's life.

anyhoo, it's actually a well known fact that you need the happy to make the emo work, if you're thrown into drama from page one without humor anywhere to be seen, then you get bored and stop reading by page three. even hellsing found the formula of alternating the drama with the humor to give readers a break from being burnt out on one emotion and putting the book away.

plus, a lame joke or two makes the end of the world easier to handle.

I believe you've nicely summed up the Greek theatre device called catharsis.
