Strangely enough, this was what I'm like. I have a whole file dedicated to "incomplete stories," some of which are maybe half a page to others that have nearly five whole pages of writing. My problem was the combination of two things that managed to kill my drive: 1.) I edited FAR too much as I went, my frustration skyrocketed because it wasn't perfect right off the bat, 2.) While I can focus when I am intensly interested in something, anything that begins to seem boring or tedious/frustrating is immediatley tossed out my brains window.
This comic is the first thing I've ever done out of my own interest/whim that has managed to make it to a "routine," of any sort. This occurence is causing a profound effect within me, I thing: I've recently taken on some ambitious projects and have actually managed to maintain them to some degree despite being in school. For the first time in my life, I feel like I could create something that would last.
Also, I've accepted that a large part of my writing (like above) and drawing is Cathartic in nature, and thus haven't really attempted any novel/long plotline stuff yet, but I plan to start something along those lines soon...

AUGH I STILL WANT TO DO OTHER STORIES

Post by Cope »

Oh, all this talk of completing stories reminds me...

Well done, past Cope! Now come over here so I can punch you in the face for not finishing it sooner.

Because I've always loved to draw. If I'm not drawing my comic I'll probably be drawing something else anyway. So why not? *shrugs*

I don't edit. At all. Whatsoever. I tend to reach a point in my stories, where I've written off the seat of my pants and it's about 3/4s done, and I've outlined the end, and I just need to write to THE END and then edit because of my messy, fast way of flinging myself there.

And then I die. That is when I die. The 'finished' script my webcomic is based on is exactly like that. I've written a Force-awful script and probably with about an eighth of it to go... the huge, epic final battle between all sentient-kind on the planet, where the fate of the universe will be decided on the edge of a knife and all that crap... that's where I stopped writing it. There's a point by point outline of the rest, a few scrawled necessary dialogue bits--what the ENTIRE story's driving towards... and I stopped.

When I say 'seven unfinished novels', I mean that two actually have 'the end' written on them but they're so full of plotholes it isn't funny, one was a sprawling childhood mess--130 pages in Word!--two are over 100k and one has a point by point outline of the end and the other has the final scene written, and a time gap that I have to fill in... how he got from there to there to there... both need a ton of editing... one's 50k and I'm never touching it again, and one's somewhere in the middle of that wordcount. This is most certainly not counting all my starts, somewhere between 5-30 pages long. Those aren't novels, those are POTENTIAL novels. >.> My unfinished projects have pretty impressive word counts and page counts.

But yeah, this has that sort of Nanowrimo production feel to it. It keeps me on a pace. Which is good...

Trust me Lego, you should pursue infamy over fame. It suits you much better.

if i was actually interested in money and fame, i don't think i'd be going the webcomic route.

Yeah. Besides, money and fame usually involves selling your soul or something.

Hmm, well, I do it because it's my childhood dream - to make my own comic for people read and love. So far it's... well, it doesn't seem like I have a lot of fan mail coming in, but I really enjoy working on my comic.

And yes, I also want to move out and get a small studio for me and my girlfriend where I can just sit at an awesome drawing desk, sketching out the pages and checking my computer for fan mail. Drawing cartoons is my life.

I do my comic because I've wanted to draw comics since I was a kid. The fact that I can produce, pimp, and sell my own comics is the greatest thing in my life.

My only regret is that I didn't do this sooner.

I've always wanted to go into comics for a while.

Even when I was in gifted courses and stuff, the part of me that "stuck out" to everyone else the most was my artwork -- even when I was in first grade and my stuff looked awful, but at least I colored my skin and hair the right colors compared to everybody else. I started writing for a while, but even then I sketched out tons of details and stuff in my notebooks, and eventually I just became bored enough with writing that I went back to comics again and decided to do something that still challenged me.

I actually started working on the webcomic (beyond just sketchery) when just putting out stuff on DeviantArt and GaiaOnline wasn't getting me anywhere. Or rather, it was that my art was passable, but not exceptional. Doing the webcomic has not only expanded my profile for gaining commissions, it's also improved my artwork to exceptional levels.

I'm actually considering doing a bonus story soon, but I'm debating whether I want to not because I necessarily can, but because I feel like going back to just writing a novel feels... cheap compared to writing and drawing a graphic novel, but I don't want to make the bonus story just "additional pages to the ongoing arc" either. (My current idea involves writing the novel but including a bonus illustration for each chapter.) There's just something more respectable now about a comic versus a plain old novel to me, y'know?

I'm doing it to improve my art.

If I could do this as a career, I'd be very happy, but am just not there yet artistically.

My reason is just that I want to know that I can finish something without quitting on it, which I do a lot on projects I start.

One might think that you'd not get any. Things must be really bad if they're even worse than that...

Hmmmmm well this made me think. I suppose the answer for me would be because I enjoy entertaining people. Perhaps I enjoy the attention, but I think I genuinely enjoy seeing people have a good time. That and I am always up for having good fun no matter how nerdy, crazy, or whatever. The comics are also a way of me getting ideas out of my head and out into the world. I feel like making a webcomic is giving me a sense of purpose and identity. I'm the dude making random comics and showing them to the world. That and I get bored in my classes and doodle too much.
I hope your not expecting me to make a joke not related to ninjas, pirates, Jesus, cyborgs, or a combination of all of those.
