Georgia - Russia war over!

Post by Killbert-Robby »

The conflict is over. Russia has ended "operations" in Georgia by the order of the President.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7555858.stm

Well we've done it gents, against all odds, we've survived another war. There is truly no end to the epic endless battles mankind will wage, and the suffering that will wreck our very homes, but dammit, we've made it again. Congratulations everyone.

When I heard of the Russian bombing attacks on the radio, I thought they had bombed Gor, not Gori. And I thought to myself that at least something good came out of this nastiness.

It's called Georgia in english?

I found it amusing how Russia and USA played oposite roles from those they had in Kosovo conflict. They practically quoted each other from a few months ago.

Haha! Would that they had. Bombing Gor would be a service to mankind. And if not mankind, certainly womankind.

Actually, linguistically speaking I can see how they're related.

I guess, I just love seeing the Westernization of country names. Or in other languages even. I'm a nerd like that >_>

The native name of Georgia is Sakartvelo. "Georgia" is an Italian invention from the middle ages; a reference to Saint George. I must admit I see no correlation between "Georgia" and the Slavic-language name "Gruzia"; I think the Slavic version of "George" is something like "Gergyov".

Anyway. This whole debacle looks to me like a massive miscalculation on the part of president Saakashvili and his government. They sent the Georgian army into South Ossetia to take control of the area despite Russian "peacekeeping" troops being stationed there. Did they really expect Russia would not react? What were they thinking?

This is not related to the topic at hand, but I thought I'd better keep all politics in one folder: apparently, Michael Palin's travel show about Serbia has been censored for saying that all sides in bosnian war shared responsibility for the conflict. And there were a lot of complaint letters, some of which invoked Godwin's law, even.
I dunno, from what I saw on Youtube, and what was quoted in articles, he said nothing that I wouldn't confirm. On the other hand, the quotes from the complaining letters were contradictory (saying that he was "simplifying" the issue by saying that things weren't black and white?). But BBC sided with anonimous letter-writers rather than with their reported who was at the place where the story happened and talked directly to the people who lived through it.
I wouldn't bring up all of that, but it's kind of disheartening that after almost fifteen years, people are still so eager to tag us as Hollywood-type bad guys, and when someone tries to point to the big picture, he gets his right to speak revoked? I'm kinda depressed about that.

CENSORSHIP!?!? D:
We must do everything in our power to ensure that the original version of his travel show is distributed as widely as possible. Or write angry letters to BBC telling them off in a logical manner. McDuffies, you'd be excellent at that. E-mails may work too...
Censorship is a touchy subject with me. I can't stand the thought of creativity or information being controlled or limited.
Seeing stuff like this makes me want to go psychotic on someone...

One letter can cause a lot of confusion

Post by Cope »

Don't worry, guys...he wasn't "censored", just "censured"...and the BBC just said they took "note" of said censure, which could mean any number of things. Maybe they told Palin to stop mentioning politics, or maybe they read their board's reprimand and threw it in the bin.

it basically means they chewed him out for an hour and put a note in his personnel file that he did something they didn't like

Interesting bit of linguistic trivia: When Georgia was a part of the Soviet Union, its Finnish name was "Gruusia", after the Russian "Gruziya". Now the independent Georgia is called "Georgia" in Finnish.

Either way... if it's up to the point where you shouldn't even express a different opinion on that subject...

It was quite interesting to watch CNN and german TV news shows during the georgian conflict - so many news, so many sides. I even can't say correctly when this conflict started that ended in the death of so many innocent people. I can't believe the georgian president calls himself a winner in this situation ...
