Lower/Upper case fonts vs. All CAPS

Post by UrbanSuburban »

How do you guys feel about the use of lower/upper case fonts in comics? Yeah it's traditional to use all caps, but what do you think is easier to read?

It largely depends on the font. Some are too small to read at comic-balloon sizes unless they're in all caps. Some others are quite readable.

I prefer fonts that allow me to work in lower/upper case (as you put it). It's more correct, usually looks nicer and allows you to go to captitals if you want someone shouting or similar.

I think it depends a lot on what kind of look you're going for in your comic overall. I want a classic comic-book look, so I picked out an all-caps font. In the wrong setting though, the same font would be really annoying. It would look ridiculous on Dinosaur Comics.

When I hand-draw my stuff, I do all caps to make it easier to read. But when I'm doing it on my PC, then I do upper and lower case because its easy enough to read as it is.

I'd prefer to be using a font with upper and lower cases. Was using Comic Sans until I started hearing people say "OMG YOU CAN'T DO THAT OMG COMIC SANS OMG NOOOOO!!!!" :P

While I don't see what the big deal is about Comic Sans, apparently it is a big deal. So I went to Blambot and downloaded the free font I liked best. Unfortunately it doesn't allow lower case, but it's acceptable.

Yeah I've had some trouble with font types but decided to stick with Mighty Zeo 2.0. It look great in upper/lower case which is what I've decided to stick with for my comic. IMHO, it's just an easier read and like Joel says it'd be easier to start yelling by turning to ALL CAPS. Thanks for the all the help and good points all around, especially how the font type depends on the style of the comic. You guys are awesome.

I like using all caps, but I think it ultimately depends on the look you're going for as well as wether or not it complements the artwork well. In terms of legibility, I think it's fine either way.

I hand letter my comics using all caps. It fits the style of my comic (newspaper strip) and is simply easier to read.

I usually use a variety of comic fonts where the letters automatically come in all capitals, with the shift key simply making them a bit bigger. I just like the look a lot.

I prefer upper and lower case. I also happen to like Comic Sans font, and think that the arguements against using it are a lot of hooey.

The reason I like a mix of upper and lower case is that webcomics are on the internet, where from day one, ALL CAPS IS SHOUTING. By using a mix of upper and lower case, I can continue to use all caps for shouting.

I like Comic Sans, and I almost ended up using it. I think it was one of Joel F's tutorials that talked me out of it. I ended up using Fanboy Hardcore instead, which it turns out I like more.

i think i use three main fonts , one for humans , the other for Andriods ( makes it easyer to tell the diffrence ) and the voices "would" sound a bit diffrent

then i use a entirely diffrent set for the "narrator"

Toon town for human All caps type
for the andriods SF therimin Gothic
and the narrator uses Mighty ZEO 2.0
the other font i use a lot is called "gunship"

effects and other vioces are as needed
but those are the main ones the comic uses - when i started i showed the Comic Sans serif and she said NO WAY we are not useing that its lame .. ( or so she says ) im wondering .. umm why? convention? does it look too simple? :shifty:
anyone got any ideas?

I use a font that is default all Caps and doesn't have a Caps setting. Its called Webletter I think. I just find it easier to use for comic bubbles because it is more uniform and easier on the eye, but maybe thats just me. The comics I did way back when were done with the Lower/Upper method and it just doesn't look 'right' looking back at them now. As for when I want to emphasise a particular piece of text, I either up the font size on those words by a lil bit, or I underline them. I find that either way adds the extra oomf just as well as Caps would in a normal situation.

I use an all caps font (digital strip). It's not very flashy and it's pretty easy to read for me. The letter 'i' (and maybe 'j'--I can't remember) is the only one that switches between caps and lower case, but even then it's not really a lower case 'i'. If I want to emphasize something, I either change the text by using bold, italics,or modify the font size for the word. Or I use a different font (if someone is yelling, for example).

I made my own font based on a tutorial at George Comics. It's upper and lower case, which I think suits an epic fantasy comic better than all caps. When i read all caps, IT LOOKS LIKE EVERYONE'S YELLING, and doesn't suit my work.

I use Mighty Zeo all caps for normal speech, lower case for whispering and mutterings, and for shouting I bold, increase size or swap to a fancy font. Typically Mouthbreather BB. It seems to work well enough.
