Re: Bus Fight in Gilbert, Arizona.
Anyone who thinks society is getting worse is being nostalgic and blind.
Music sucked in the seventies as much if not more than it does now. And yes, 60s and 70s worship is always in, always has, even before either happened. We remember Zeppelin but forget about Herman's Hermits. No one liked The Stooges or The Ramones back then. Both are more popular now then they ever have been.
I appreciate any effort to preserve classical music, but it has nothing to do with me. I appreciate it now more than when I was younger, but I can't jam to it.
Continued 70s worship is a better reason to leave the country than this video. What a letdown. I was expecting bodies.

Re: Bus Fight in Gilbert, Arizona.
Like I always say, there's crap from every era. It's only the stuff that's good that transcends time. I say this every time someone says that cartoons nowadays blow compared to when we were kids (I'm 26). Really think so? Watch He-Man or G.I. Joe or Rainbow Bright. Jesus Christ. Thundercats wasn't so hot either.
I used to think as a kid that all old movies were really good because they all had 4 stars. Then I realized that channels like AMC don't show the crap. Just watch Mystery Science Theater to see some of that amazing tripe.
I still stand by my comment about attention spans though. People expect things more instantaneously now. And older people than I said the same thing about us and our fancy tvs they didn't have. It's going to keep happening as technology progresses.

Well, people GET things instantaneously now. Hard to blame kids for having short-attention spans when they're bombarded with a thousand messages a second and a hundred more responsibilities and expectations than previous generations.

Re: Bus Fight in Gilbert, Arizona.
But saying that can imply that their lives are somehow more difficult now than they were, which isn't true. I think kids have LESS responsibility now than they did "back in the day". Think about it, how many children have to get up at the crack of dawn and help out on the farm anymore? How many kids have to drop out of school to help support their families (in comparison to today. Yes there are people who do this but there are "safety nets" in place that there weren't back then).yeahduff wrote:Well, people GET things instantaneously now. I just think it really depends on the kid and the parent. For some people personal accountability is non exiestent. "oh mommy The video games made me fail algebra. Algebra takes too long and video games took my attention away from it" "oh its ok sweetie if those games weren't so "XYZ" you could have paid attention to your homework.
Note: I hate algebra like nothing else in the universe, but when I was forced to take two levels of it I was forced to "have an attention span" and try and work with it or fail.

Well, that's not what I was saying. This isn't about who's had it the hardest (it's kind of odd how often that discussion comes up around here), it's about why attention spans seem to be shrinking.

Well when you said they had "a million more responsibilities" it implied, to me, that kids today have more to deal with.

Well, they do. That doesn't necessarily mean they have it harder.

Can you give some examples of these new responsibilities?yeahduff wrote:Well, they do. That doesn't necessarily mean they have it harder.

Re: Bus Fight in Gilbert, Arizona.
Are you honestly having trouble believing that a youth in the urban/suburban lifestyle of 21st century America is quite a bit more complicated than that of a farm kid in 1830?
I think we're miscommunicating somewhere, because this is not controversial.

This thread turned into something interesting. I'm surprised.
What tech stain are you talking about, recording or instrumental?Pravus wrote:I like older rock and Pop before the 80s added a permanent tech grease stain that's never been completely washed off.

Both really. Music recording has improved a lot, but the clarity of everything now seems to take out the....edginess of it. It's kind of like a kitchen knife without blood on it. And as instruments become more based on a techno sound, it brings a bit of gaudiness and popiness that just makes everything sound the same, at least to me. Also, I think our gen is gonna fuck up the world. ya for us.

Try listening to some lo-fi modern stuff. It exists.Pravus wrote:Both really. Music recording has improved a lot, but the clarity of everything now seems to take out the....edginess of it. Re: Bus Fight in Gilbert, Arizona.
I'm sure it does. Are you talkin about those really underground bands? I don't know, I always find their music a little cheesy...

Re: Bus Fight in Gilbert, Arizona.
I don't know what you mean by underground, but they're not the most well-known bands.

They're just below certain radars.

There are many parts in society that have gotten worse. It's a downward spiral that you can see happening when you look at studies of people in America. For instance, just look at obesity. Even the CDC recognize this as a growing problem that has gotten worse since 1985. The charts and graphs for things like this aren't hard to find.
Here's that said CDC Graph for anyone who is interested:
http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/trend/maps/
It has gotten worse. People are getting lazier and expecting easier ways of doing things. On a better note, however, the ammount of violence has actually decreased, despite what all these politicians seem to say. I think this has a large part to do with how many diversions there are and how many advances we've made in the medical fields.
Here's some statements about that:
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/vage.htm
So there are things that are getting worse. However, some things are improving. There are lots more stats, graphs and information about other things out there, but I'm lazy, so a five minute google search is about all I'm up for.

Yeah I think a circut got switched somewhere.yeahduff wrote:Are you honestly having trouble believing that a youth in the urban/suburban lifestyle of 21st century America is quite a bit more complicated than that of a farm kid in 1830?

And no I'm not compairing farm life to city life, those are two different things. But I feel kids, on the whole, do NOT have the responcibilities that people did previously, or at least not the same ones. Children of immagrant famialies, often times were the only ones who spoke english, had to do many things becuase thier parents couldn't, and that still goes on in come communities. I just think kids today get, as you said, handed everything instentaniously without well working for it. I used to love waiting for my chia pets and stuff to grow...now if it doesn't blink or fly or grow within 30 seconds kids get disinterested.
EDIT: Bottom line though, if it were me, I woulda beat the crap out of that emo little girl. I have 0 tollerence for disrespectful little pricks who think they're better than me just becuase mommy bought them cell phones and fancy crap.
