In a sleep-deprived fit (shortly after the birth of my son), I wrote an essay on parenthood that touched on how some of the names for the involved states were likely given by a housewife who'd gone mad due to her children. I thought it was hilarious as I was writing it, but I've been afraid to revisit it since.
Unmarried, finishing up grad school, working various small jobs at various universities. Forced to pick the "college" option. Ah well.
Before I started making webcomics...I dunno. I don't think I had any fixed idea of what a webtoonist was.

Working, college, and unmarried. I thought we all had no girlfriends and all that geeky stuff. Well, I guess I am farther from the crowd that I thought.
Now my brain hurt to thinking, what the hell happened?

I had keff recommend a manga for amanda to buy at CN expo, she bought one and enjoyed it.mcDuffies wrote:My gf and comics...legostargalactica wrote:if you recall that city block i took pictures of in the doodle thread, the inside of a clothing store I let amanda design in the image of where she works right now, she did a great job.rkolter wrote: Beth's taken to randomly handing me paper and scriptos and saying "Draw me something!"
It's working, though. She's like a kid just learning to swim. She isn't even sure what to look for in comics. She's made all her friends ask me to draw for them though. I occasionally joke about teaching her to colour my comics, but it's more likely that I will be teaching her guitar instead.
also we spent much of the con looking around for a fairly cheap but cool looking batman comic so that she could buy it and frame it.

I'm 53, one kid in college, one in high school, and have been happily married since 1980, and gainfully employed. I don't think I'm the stereotypical webcomic creator-although I very well might be a stereotypical nerd.---Al

All right, I clicked 'married and employed' or whatever. Just remember that when I started I was 'married and college'.
I think we're going to get a lot more older people around here simply because of the demographic factors which draw people to this forum--we're mostly CGers, and CG actually does take a certain amount of knowledge and know-how to figure out--the HTML and so on, which is going to make it tough for younger artists to join. You'd probably find them using a simpler interface, such as posting their comics on Deviant Art, or Drunk Duck, or LJ... There are tons of people who make comics using their Gaia Online avatars, for example, and only post them on Gaia message boards, and I guarantee you that group is a lot younger.
Also, we tend to be more dedicated comicers--that is, we're kind of a self-selected bunch. There are tons of people who start a comic, write a few strips, and then abandon it. The kind of dedication it takes to stick with a project over the course of several years generally takes a bit of maturity, and after several years, you're generally older.
And we get together and like to talk about our comics--also indicating that we're a somewhat dedicated, thinking-about-things crowd, which tends to correlate with maturity.
