You might consider doing longer hair held back in a braid. In western cultures, long hair is associated with females, while short hair is more masculine. A braid or other hair-confining style could look more feminine but still be combat-ready.

Or you could make her like me, a 5'11 woman with short hair that wears man-jeans, baggy t-shirts, and baseball hats and gets called "sir" by clerks and other public personnel on a regular basis.

Luckily I find this amusing.

@ Aiken : If you want a model to see how to make a lady look battle ready AND feminine, look at Sniper Wolf from Metal Gear Solid.

Well, you have to get the Sands of Time to touch you and turn you into a Sand Monster. But you gotta be the hero, cause no other Sand Monsters get awesome glowing tattoos.

Sounds easy enough! I was born a hero.

No ... wait ... I was born naked.

Oh well.

Ancient Greeks wouldn't have found that to be an issue.

I'm guessing very few of their heroes were able to father children, though...

The quickest colouring job i've ever done. Not too sure if the brown jacket goes with the charcoal fatigues.
Suggestions anybody?
You are trying to combine some pretty polar opposite looks there. It can be done if done well, but femininity typically disappears when going for a realistic combat ready look. Luckily she's not all uniformed up and is wearing a combination of civilian style clothing.

The brown jacket definitely works as you're combining earthen tones that replicate well in camoflauge. It adds a sense of flair and daring. Make sure to accentuate her hips more, as was suggested, and thin the neck. One of the easiest ways to show a feminine quality is to show a little skin around the abdomen by shortening the shirt or lowering the cut on the jeans. Or even both.

A few more pouches or other forms of equipment strapped on would really enhance the fighting look and can draw attention to certain areas that you want to be noticed such as exposed skin. This reinforces further what you wish to convey to the viewer: This is both a woman and a fighter.

Hair is very difficult because it is often a distinguishing mark between a male or female. To enhance the combat ready appearance her hair should be either kept short, or long and tied up. Tying the hair either into a ponytail or a bun pushes the "she's serious about kicking your ass", and I think is the better option because the hair can always be let down or loose when you want to get away from the combat orientation.

A pagoda light. This one has a bunch of imperfections, but oh well. I didn't have a lot of time to do this one.

Version 1.5

Image

New features are more womaly hips, a thinner neck and slightly rounder face.

I decided against exposing skin, mainly for pratical reasons, considering the position snipers spend most of their time in. One thing that always bugged me about sniper wolf was that the game was set in the arctic, and she was running around with her cleavage out.

Sounds like an expensive alternative to zipping your jacket up.

Speaking of, how about a longer jacket on your character? It's not really a big deal, but a short coat like that isn't very practical I think.
