Best Donation Incentives?

Post by Jekkal »

Okay, we all know we want money.

So... who thinks they have the best way ever? And what is it, if you're so convinced it works?

I'm trying the wallpaper/private incentive thing now. If it pans out, I'll let you know.

Wallpapers work well, I cover the cost of hosting my sites that way.

I've combined public and private incentives, with a side helping of original art sales. The details are still on my front page.

I brought in a fairly large amount of money, though not quite enough to cover my needs (and quite a bit of it is still sitting in my Paypal account because it's been dripping in slowly after the first two or three days).

I just donate a little to any webcomic I like. I think of it as leaving a tip.

Quoted for truth.

However, the promise of extra comics can work well if you're popular enough.

So basically free Tibetan kitten porn on a stick, with added cowbell, made with love? I don't see how anyone who's not a complete and utter freak would...

Er, Iiiiinternet. Right. I'll get right to it.

People get... MONEY?

All this time, I've been drawing my comic for the free food involved, and there hasn't even been any of that.
Liddell, my comic, wherein one learns of the Cauchy-Shorts Inequality.

Yeah, but all the money was on a stick, and you don't want to know where it had been.

Personally I don't think asking for donations is a great idea, but to each his own. I wouldn't ask fans to gimme gimme gimme, because it's you who is giving to them via your comic. Asking for something in return....nah.

It's another way to gauge demand, and when it comes to trying to do this even semi-professionally... well, income's got to start somewhere, and being able to show potential publishers how much you make just by putting up a comic can convince them a lot faster than saying you've been doing it for yea long with so many hits.

Let me put it this way.

I did exclusive art for people. No donation necessary. Just a quick game to play that was usually solved with a Google search and a forum post.

Two people participated.

Screw that.
