Saturday was my regular comic pickup day, but we almost didn't make it; I had to beg and plead to make sure we got in just so I could pick up a copy of the ComicGenesis issue. Everyone involved did a great job, I thought.
The reviews I've seen - not just about the ComicGenesis sampler, but about all the comics for FCBD - seem to fall into two main categories:
- Have a complete, standalone story, and
- Don't do reprints.
It seems like, if the ComicGenesis team wants to be "taken seriously", you should look into putting together a crossover next year. Chose a certain group of characters, come up with a short but entertaining story for them, and then have CG's best artists each do a few pages. Cameos aplenty as possible, and a key on the last couple of pages pointing out where the characters come from.
Obviously, the main problem is deciding which characters, who'll do scripting duties, who'll do art duties, etc. And maybe you'd want to have a price tag attached, since whoevers characters are "front and center" and whoever does art duties will definately get major billing there.
But it would certainly kick the legs out from under Mr. Snooty Critic and his "Blah blah I will complain about a comic not being good enough because it's a collection rather than a whole story."
