what if... the water being pushed into space freezes? that would make it jagged and stuff?
(i cant arse myself into redoing the pic...)
It definately looks plantlike to me for another reason - it blew out at the poles - an explosion in a water bubble would have quickly infused the water with gas, turning it opaque, and blasting the entire bubble at once, possibly with jagged effects, but all over the surface of a growing sphere, more like an explosion of a star.
In space, the water would have frozen, and then the explosion would have shattered the entire thing in one go. You might get a blast like the one you've shown here, but the circumfrence of the bubble would be cracked and shattered like safety glass, and in any case fogged to the point of being opaque.
This looks more like a pea overfilled with propane or some other transparent, flammable gas, and then poked at both ends and set alight.
It's a very, very cool picture though - just not a watery explosion.
