Annual Statistics

Post by MHPayne »

Folks:

As far as I can tell, this is the full list of those comics and creators who have won awards and those that have made the final ballots but haven't won since the first awards were given out in 2001. The format is alphabetical--it's the library clerk in me: I can't help it--so you have the name, then the year, then the number of awards won that year followed by the number of other categories the comic or creator was nominated in.

If that makes sense, skip this next part. If it doesn't make sense, here's Sinfest as an example. Its entry looks like this:

Sinfest: 2001--2, 0
2003--2, 3
2004--0, 3
2007--0, 2

That means it won 2 awards in 2001 and was nominated in no other categories except those 2. It got no nominations at all in 2002, then sprang back in 2003, winning 2 awards and being nominated in 3 other categories. In 2004, it won no awards but got 3 nominations; in 2005 and 2006, it again didn't make the final ballot in any category; but in 2007, it returned with 2 nominations.

No comic has won an award all 7 years, though Megatokyo has gotten nominations each year with Schlock Mercenary and Something Positive getting nominations in six of those seven years. As for who's won the most awards:

Mac Hall: 9
Chopping Block: 8
The Perry Bible Fellowship: 8
Count Your Sheep: 7
Penny Arcade: 7
Questionable Content: 6
Megatokyo: 5

Also, since 2005, we've given awards to individual writers and artists for their bodies of work over the course of each year. Their names appear following the lists of webcomics.

I don't know if this is the most useful format for this information, but, well, here it all is.

Mike, the Registrar

I first put it together:

In 2004, I think, so I just need to update it every year. I know I posted it last year, but I guess that was on our previous message board...

This had to take you a tremendous amount of time to do. Kudos for your hard work. I would like to point out an error, however. Please check the Lackadaisy history. Tracy was nominated in 4 categories in 2007 and won all 4 of those. You have indicated 3, 0.

The categories were:
Outstanding Newcomer
Outstanding Artist
Outstanding Character rendering
Outstanding Anthropomorphic Comic

Thanks,
Max

The way I look at it:

Lackadaisy the comic was nominated in three categories while Ms. Butler was nominated separately in the Outstanding Artist category.

After all, when Shaenon Garrity won Outstanding Writer in 2005, she was writing, I think, three comics. So rather than listing all three of her comics as having won, I decided to list the winners and nominees for Artist and Writer in their own section after all the comics at the end of the whole thing.

Mike

Oh, and thank you, Mark. We'll have the procedures for this voting thing worked out by next year, I promise! :)

Yep, I definitely missed it. I really did try to pay attention to that board, too, but there was a lot to follow. (Does anyone else find it ironic, lack of advertising aside, that that forum attracted far more discussion and posters, despite CG arguably comprising the largest reader base for the awards? Meh.)

Regardless, it would be great to be able to link to something like this the next time people complain that the same comics get nominated and win every single year.

But then, I'd also love to combat that sort of attack with separate threads for suggestions for each category. If creators or fans could link to or display a specific example in a post, perhaps with a brief explanation of why they believe it's worthy of a nomination, then prospective voters who are simply skimming could get a better impression of what's out there.

Or has that been tried before, and it failed? I can see how the sheer number of categories could be overwhelming... but you have to start somewhere, right? :-?

Shardz, yes, good idea. A direct link to a Nomination Suggestions message thread on the Category List page next year.
