You're seriously the first person to pick up on that!

Her background involves one asian parent, yes. I think people don't see it because the comic is in colour and she's dyed her hair blonde and the assumption is, of course, blonde = caucasian. It's hard to show things like that subtley with just face and eye shape (and hair texture) without risking overexaggeration.

Oh, and Sparrow ... I don't know what ethnicity your gal is (looks like she's going to refuse somebody's orders or something, very sexy), so I'm going with a safe guess of half Inuit, half American-Indian (last of her tribe) thing.

Like Joel Fagin said, it's easy to see how it could be a stylistic thing. If there were a few other (caucasian) people next to her, it'd probably be easier to tell.

Okay... keeping this thread as a TTT thread, let's give some critiques.

ladycheru:those would be a lot better if they were outlined darker and... not on notebook paper. We won't believe in the hawt of the girl unless we believe in the hawt of the drawing first.

Lurkingfish: That pic's cool. It would have made me want to read you comic... if I hadn't already been reading it.

Good anatomy; good line style... not so sure about the position of her left arm in relation to the gun. The joining angle of her elbow makes the gun look a little off, like it's not straight, but curved. But, yay, guns make every girl hawt.

americangothic: Huzzah for full nudity! Your anatomy's good, but I have issues believing the pose. It's the legs, I think; they're clamped together. I don't know about you, but I have issues standing when my legs are clamped, much less leaniing my weight to my right side as this girl is apparently doing. Poor thing's going to lose her balance as soon as the camera shutter clicks, and topple into that bookcase.

wyldcherry: Your adorable, bold style is definitely a great asset. I want to see more of her (as in, the bum

majorneurosis: Mm... feminists... It's ironic that I used to be one, and now I'm their worst nightmare. As a girl who digs girls, I find the sign-carrying type kind of a turn-off. Although I'm all for the bra-burning! As for the drawing, I'm not entirely sure if she's opposed to this, or supporting it, due to the dialogue. The girl's face is expressive and well-defined, but don't forget to carry that definition to the rest of the body. I want to see the wrinkles in her clothing and the strands in her hair.

Also... I liked that sketch so much that I decided to color it. She's of middle-eastern descent, but she was born and bred in the USA.

I understand you arm laziness. It's tough to strike a balance between drawing the arms to thick and burly, or too thin and malnourished-looking.

Very true. Everyone else in the comic is Whitey McWhiterson so I think the fact that it doesn't come across has more to do with my inability to render it correctly.

Thank you, you're very kind. It seems the comment I've been getting most frequently is that my anatomy is poor (and also complaints about my colouring style being too muddy).

Yeah, the left arm is a bit wierd - it was a really odd angle to draw. I found some good reference art for it... but only after I'd inked it, whoopsie. I've been trying really, really hard to improve.

I like your chickie too, she has a very tasty skin tone. I approve.

Here's the coloured version. I scuffed her up a bit for the actual ad itself, but this was the base colouring job.

fwiw, your colouring style suits your subject matter. Not everything has to be rendered in jewel-tones

A local bookstore was closing and I picked up several books on anatomy for artists (underlying bone and muscle structure, including lips and eyes), very inexpensive. One that surprised me was How to Draw Manga: Bodies & Anatomy from the Society for the Study of Manga. Instead of being a guide to drawing willowy (or stubby) manga-style characters, it's actually a good general, simple guide to arm and leg and torso movements in realistic proportion. It skews too much to "men do actions, women lounge in sexy poses," but if you can get it at a good price, the drawings are clear and useful for basic comic needs. It's not a thorough book, but as a super-quick reference, I've been finding it more helpful than my stack of books with photos of models.
