DrunkDuck Bought Out
Read all about the purchase by Platinum Studios in today's New York Times.

Apparently the DrunkDuck forums have been hopping (not necessarily in the bad sense) since at least yesterday, and the privacy policy has been revised twice (since when, I don't know). The article lists a heck of a lot of potential deals for the webcomickers. I wonder what connections Platinum has to be able to make tv and movie deals? (MIB was one thing; a webcomic of--publically--little-known status and possibly fluctuating art and storyline would be quite another.)
Maybe I'm misreading, but is it the current DD artists who are being referred to as "comic book artists" in the article?

Yeah... but it could still be seen as having been "professionally" published by a recognized (if small) company, and created by a "professional" artist/writer.
I suppose by "professional" I mean that the artist/writer was paid and possibly had some sort of impressive, consistent work in their portfolio, and that the comic was published (and later pitched) by a company that had a history of publishing similarly impressive and consistently-drawn/written comics. *Shrug*
Whatever happens, it will definitely be interesting.

Oh yeah! This was linked in chat. Honestly, I'm not sure that this is a bad thing. Platinum Studios is one of the few companies out there activly reaching out to webtoonists. If you're interested, there was an interview with their chairman a while back on Digital Strips.

As I see it - it's really just another reason I'm glad I'm on Comic Genesis and not D.D. (There are so many
) Scott Rosenberg sounds like he's spent all of an hour or two looking into webcomics and decided he wanted a piece of the action... Penny Arcade summed up my impression of his New York Times interview pretty well.

Eh...NYT wrote:While the advertising revenue would not be shared with the comic creators, artists would share in the revenue from downloadable comics for cellphones and mobile media devices like iPods, comics-related ring tones, wallpaper and items like T-shirts or plastic scale models of comic book characters.
...also, comic-related ring tones? Umm...

I'm a long time DD user, so you can only imagine the f---ing horror I felt when I heard Volte sold out like the little b---- he is. Of course, I was absolutely expecting the worst when I heard about this f---ing update 2.0 he had planned. And then they actually went through with it...
Let me tell ya, DrunkDuck is f---ing dead. They have sold out and I'd place money on it that Platinum Studios will be stealing s--- before long. And the forums went from user-friendly to eye-rapingly bad. Yes, EYE-RAPINGLY BAD! It literally hurts to look at them!
So just look at that PennyArcade strip and read their post about it. They are dead on. DD is totally f---ed!
(LOL! CENSORED POST FTW!)

You're ok to swear, dude.
This is a silly situation- feels a lot like they heard of these new `Web Comics` on the Internets and they want a piece of a non-existant revenue. What exactly are they trying to do here? They're saying they're opening up the internet to comics? Sorry mate, it's already open. We're doing fine on our own.

Which was the gist of the Penny Arcade post. All of a sudden the rest of the world has noticed that there are webcomics, a new venture over a decade old.Komiyan wrote:You're ok to swear, dude.

I'm glad Keenspot and ComicGen are organized the way they are; I don't see a healthy future for DrunkDuck.

Oh shit, we can swear? FUCK YES!
And it's not so much opening up the internet for comics as it is turning DD into a Platinum Studios advert.
Ya see, what they are going to do is put all of their print stuff on there in some format before they sell it in RL. And then they will try to recruit new artists from on DD and will keep 90% of the profits made from said comics.
Now all of us will have to compete with thier professional print comics as well. And I don't think any of us want to compete with print comics. If we did, would we be on the internet?

My thoughts exactly.
My guess is that it is going to turn into a heartless syndicate or fail and go down in horrible, internal flames.
No more than we are already 'competing' on the internet. Now all of us will have to compete with thier professional print comics as well.

We already are, if you can call it that. being that people read print comics and people read webcomics.Rich of EMD wrote:And I don't think any of us want to compete with print comics. If we did, would we be on the internet?
People will especially read free stuff. because its free. and they hate their jobs. so they muck around on the computer all day.
