The Mythology of Comics

Post by Blackaby »

Mr Caravaggio is a marvel and shared with me something which I've decided to share with everyone else too:

Image

An old, old picture that depicts an 'all seeing entity'. Those who've checked out my lil' comic will probably recognise that the design of these ominscient beings is reflected in my CEO-of-heaven, the multi-eyed Uvayah, as designed by Sortelli. (Uvayah, incidentally, is one of the many names of the Metatron - the Blackaby universe operates without an actual god figure.)

Image

I'm pretty ecstatic by Caravaggio's find, since while I did a lot of research and pulled a LOT of old books on demonology/mythology/divinity, I'd never seen a pictorial representation of the "all seeing" until now that completely reflected what I'd read about.

I'm wondering who else has brought in mythological/historical elements to their stories, and why they've invovled them/what cool research they've done/discoveries they've made.

Nobody notices 'cos it's rude and horrible, but a good deal of research goes into Toy Division. For instance when I draw a syringe -it has to be a hulking great 1930s model

I wasted an hour of my life drawing that damn art deco bath room *sniff*

lol just kidding, I am a history nerd and I love it!

I did tons of research on Egyptian mythology, but that comic never happened.

Folklore was a focus of mine in college, and I love finding ways to work mythology into comics.

I just wrapped up the first storyline of BING: Demon Days for CAT LEGEND. It's got the boatman, Charon (Sometimes spelled 'Cheiron' - or any other way), demons, imps, a Gorgon, the Devil - Lillith even merits a brief mention as the mother of a few of my nasties.

The 20 page story ran Mondays on Cat Legend, starting HERE.

[edit] Oh, and incidentally - that Tycho Brahe is the very same astronomer that Penny-Arcade's Tycho is named for. Just goes to show that, like folk narratives, all stories wind up connected somehow.

I try to involve a good deal of Mythology in Demonocity. Unfortunately, I maim it and put it through the meat grinder before I put it in the comic. Demonocity - a hot dog of mythology.

The main element of mythology has been Pandora, one of the main characters. I've used two characters from the myth - Hope, and Pandora. I'm an ancient studies minor - and some of the books I've had to read have leaked into the comic. Eventually I will be including Eris in some form.

I make liberal use of the idea of the grim reaper, centaurs, elves, demons, and various other mythological creatures.

I'm actually adapting a Bible story for part of my comic. But don't worry, it's actually a fairly violent one, and a pretty obscure one, too, so you might not even notice.

I did a lot of medieval history research for "Little White Knight". That was very painful being that I don't like history very much, but results were very pleasing. Practically half of story wrote itself once I got rolling, because characters and events were already there, and it was always surprisingly matching my original plans.

I did a lot of research for "Kill'er now" too, but this time it was research of film history, urban legends and some more recent events, so it was actually very interesting.

That's very cool, Blackaby. I was wondering where you got Uvayah from.

I've tried to stay away from direct links to myths, as myths take on physical form in my comic and I don't want Zeus and Tiamat walking around. :) I have tons of historical references, though. I was wondering on my LJ just the other day if anyone cared that my Lee was packing a Confederate era shotgun, or that my Grant is wielding an authentic Union officer's sabre.

In my next chapter, though...next chapter, I cut loose, and Tiamat might just make an appearance. Alongside Uvayah, and goD the dyslexic doG, and who knows what else...

I did as much research about what Earth will be like in the coming century as possible.

Then I decided to chuck all accuracy and do what I wanted :P.

That's really cool, all the best comics have some degree of research in them.
I didn't really have to do much of my own, since I know the city (I REALLY need to put in that note of why their apartment is so huge....) and I'm meshing popular beliefs of two religions into one, so since I'm warping everything for my story (and because it can be warped without crossing the line most time) research wasn't really an issue. It's just kinda "Well, what would I do if I was still in the city?"
Not that anyone cares.

RotD has Satan.

I did precisely zero amount of research.

Like litterally he flips people off right and left when he hears the word geek...allegedly he dated a geek once, but one night in an exchange of passion...well I'll let you think it out foryourself.

Well, I admittedly haven't used much mythology, or even historical (or geographical for that matter) references in the comic so far. (And I'm still trying to figure out where I could stick an isolated castle on the north-west English coastline)

Though, for those who care, I am currently researching the conditions on the Western Front in the First World War. I'm let you take what you wish from that ;)

I'm using loads of Celtic myths, and oh my god...just any myth that strikes my fancy and taking from it but adapting the character to my story and mythos of the place. It's loads of writing. And then I have to draw it all...

Also...Blackaby needs to update more.
