Unless I'm far too tired to be typing, "we" is the subject, "knew" is the verb, and "thee" is the object.

"ye" can be either plural or formal singular, but is nominative in either case, rather than objective... So "ye hardly knew us." would be correct if the tables were turned, but "we hardly knew thee." is the correct form for this sentence on the table at the moment.

Google search for "we hardly knew thee" brings up 737 results.

So, grammatically correct or no, the correct one for the cliche is "ye".

I love it when someone can be so logically sound, and yet still be wrong.

If (and only if) we can get from the OP that he was trying to abuse the grammar in the cliched manner (Intarwebs or Internets v. Internet, etc.) then your argument might hold some weight... Otherwise, it remains more correct to say thee than ye.

Google hits for "all that glistens is not gold" -775
Google hits for "all that glisters is not gold" -12,700
Google hits for "all that glitters is not gold" - 168,000 (added)

Google hits for "Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him well." -323
Google hits for "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio." -289

And yet, the second in each case, remains the correct quote, whether the cliched misquotation is more or less common.

I first looked other places, but as is very often the case lately, the articles on Wikipedia are actually pretty excellent...

I'd start with the article on the T-V Distinction (this concept will be fairly familiar to anyone who speaks any German, French, Japanese, Spanish, etc.) and then move on to the article on Thou.

The "glisters" quote from the good old merchant is one of my pet peeves, particularly when I hear/see it as "glitters." Ugh.
